Job Summary
Perform journeyman-level operation of equipment and machinery in the utilities plant. Maintain the necessary technical skills to repair, maintain, inspect, and operate Utilities production, distribution, and energy management equipment. Responsible for providing assistance in the operation of electrical, mechanical equipment, or systems.
Job Duties
- Maintains records of equipment operational status.
- Starts up, shuts down, and adjusts combined heat and power equipment, including heat recovery steam generators and combustion turbines, other power generation equipment, steam boilers, hot water system equipment, and/or chilling station equipment or systems in accordance with established operational and safety procedures.
- Completes work orders using automated maintenance program systems.
- Identifies and reports safety hazards.
- Supervises support staff as needed.
- Attends staff and safety training meetings.
- Attends plant operation and maintenance training courses.
- Trains new personnel as required.
- Performs preventative or corrective maintenance tasks incidental to the operation of mechanical or electrical systems.
- Diagnostics and repairs complex system-wide problems.
- Organizes repair projects involving multiple trades.
- Backs up the coordinator in his absence.
- Interprets trend analysis and determines when equipment should be started and stopped.
- Develops and implements complex control programs on the energy management system.
- Creates and tracks work order progress using asset management tracking systems.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Working Environment
Some exposure to weather and physical hazards. Exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards is typical of central plants and utility distribution systems. May be required to work extended or rotating shifts. Lifting heavy objects and working in a plant environment.
Qualifications
- High school graduate or GED or equivalent years of education, experience, and/or training, and four (4) years of journeyman experience (in HVAC, Electrical, Electronics, or Stationary Engineering) or two (2) years of experience with Trane/York Chillers, Combustion Turbine Generators, and District Heating and Cooling Distribution Loops.
- Must be capable of demonstrating the ability to perform the essential functions of the job in a post-offer employment test as administered by UTMB Rehab Services.
- Valid Class C Driver's license.
