Utility Maintenance Technician (Multiple Vacancies)

About the role

The City of Santa Cruz is seeking two Utility Maintenance Technician positions in the Water Department. These roles are entry and training level positions, primarily supporting the Water Production section of the department. The positions involve assisting with the maintenance of various facilities used in water treatment, distribution, and storage.

Responsibilities

• Assists in performing regular preventive maintenance on plant equipment such as valves, motors, and drive parts.
• Helps install, test, calibrate, and maintain electrical systems and equipment.
• Inspects plant equipment and related facilities.
• Performs minor electrical maintenance tasks such as troubleshooting and disconnecting motors, and replacing fuses.
• Maintains work logs, inventory, and equipment control records.
• Operates a variety of test equipment and uses small hand tools for maintenance and repair of electronic and related equipment.
• Maintains tools and power equipment.
• May assist treatment plant operators with tasks like line and tank chlorination, water quality testing, and well maintenance.
• Performs general maintenance and basic landscaping work as required.
• Uses a CMMS or other computerized monitoring and operating systems.
• May assist in confined space entry and rescue operations.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• One year of mechanical or electrical experience involving the routine maintenance of standard drive equipment such as motors and pumps.
• Knowledge of major parts of standard drive equipment and routine maintenance tasks.
• Basic safety procedures and electrical knowledge with an emphasis on electrical safety.
• Ability to identify and use common hand tools, take and record readings accurately, and make sound decisions within established guidelines.
• Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
• Basic computer skills for data entry and record keeping.
• Willingness to work flexible hours, including holidays, evenings, weekends, and overtime.
• Ability to wear respiratory protection equipment and/or arc flash safety equipment.

Qualifications

• Possession and continued maintenance of a valid California Class C driver's license.
• Must obtain and maintain within 24 months of date of appointment: Either a State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) D1 or T1 certification.
• Successfully complete the city’s respirator fit testing protocols; may be required to be clean shaven.
• Successful completion of training as a forklift operator within one year of appointment.
