Utility/Maintenance Technician

The primary responsibilities of the Utilities Technician include operating, installing, training, troubleshooting, and repairing all plant boiler, utilities systems, and equipment. This position requires broad mechanical skills and functions as a Millwright.

Responsibilities

• Maintains and promotes company standards for safety, quality, food safety, sanitation, and GMPs.
• Understands basic applications of electrical and controls safety requirements within the maintenance department.
• Installs, operates, repairs, inspects, tests, and maintains stationary equipment including boilers, heating systems, generators, refrigeration, turbines, pumps, piping systems, valves, gauges, pressure relief devices, steam traps, boiler safeties, and control panels.
• Performs preventative and predictive maintenance on boilers and components, including maintaining records and routine paperwork.
• Conducts monitoring and failure analysis of meters, gauges, and controls to determine repair or replacement needs.
• Troubleshoots steam systems (traps, valves, pumps, isolation), burners, natural gas systems, and equipment operation and sequencing.
• Manages scheduled work lists while supporting plant needs and utilizing time effectively.
• Works with outside contractors and auditors to ensure work quality meets company and insurance expectations.
• Locates equipment documentation (SOPs, drawings) and contacts external tech support for after-hours scheduling and downtime scenarios.
• Acts as a training mentor in areas of expertise and trains less experienced maintenance personnel.
• Responds to on-call plant needs (24/7) to coordinate resources and address emergency downtime scenarios.
• Cleans job site and tools, stores tools and equipment in designated places.
• Works on ladders, scaffolds, forklift cages, and in pits using proper safety precautions; wears personal protective equipment as needed.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Two years of trade school and/or five years’ experience in maintenance.
• Proficient with computers, including Microsoft Office Suite and CMMS.
• Able to install, maintain, and repair steam and hot water equipment systems involving boilers with complex components and critical tolerances.
• Monitors and adjusts thermostats, switches, regulators, safety devices, and alarm systems in compliance with safety standards.
• Uses electronic controls, devices, and automatic boiler management systems to identify equipment malfunctions.
• Completes projects with limited management oversight based on individual knowledge and experience.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to read and interpret technical manuals and drawings.
• Quantitative skills and knowledge of math functions such as percentages, decimals, and charting numerical data.
• High degree of self-confidence and maturity to make decisions and solve problems with minimal direction.
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to communicate effectively and work as a team player.
• Complete and maintain Idahoan Foods forklift certification.

Work Environment

• Performs physical activities including heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds), standing on concrete floors for extended periods, and working with moving parts in loud noise levels.
• Works in boiler rooms that may be cramped, hot, and extremely noisy.
• Handles sanitizers and cleaning chemicals.
• Works various shifts as assigned.
