Based in Charleston, SC, this semi-skilled role focuses on the construction and repair of underground distribution systems.
Responsibilities
- Safely perform new construction, maintenance, and repair of de-energized underground distribution systems following provided directions
- Apply working knowledge of underground construction standards and installation
- Operate heavy equipment including dump trucks, backhoes, trenchers, and mini-excavators
- Identify different sizes and types of materials for pre-assembly
- Apply rigging principles and knowledge of materials used in underground construction
- Understand techniques for pulling underground utility lines
- Adhere to minimum approach distance, soil classifications, excavation, shoring, and ladder requirements
- Understand heavy equipment set-up, procedures, underground services, infrastructure, and duct banks
- Excavate dirt, rock, concrete, and other materials using hand tools and power equipment
- Participate in random drug and alcohol testing supporting a drug-free workplace
Requirements
- Advanced ability to read and understand blueprints, work orders, instructions, and procedures
- Working knowledge of the Internet, email, iPad, company radio, and industry-related programs
- Proficiency in critical thinking, troubleshooting, and problem resolution
- Maintain and safely operate company vehicles, equipment, and tools in good working order
- General knowledge of OSHA standards and guidelines
- Active listening and effective communication (written, verbal, and nonverbal)
- Self-motivation, organization, and prioritization management
- Adherence to safety rules and company policies
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Technical degree, 2-4 years’ field experience, extensive mechanical ability, or a combination of education and/or experience
- Certifications or experience preferred in: OSHA certifications, CDL A (preferred) or ability to obtain
Physical Requirements
- Frequently lift and carry up to 60 pounds
- Properly inspect, wear, and remove OSHA-required personal protective equipment
- Accurately perform basic math calculations including addition, subtraction, fractions, decimals, multiplication, division, and measurements
- Capable of working in confined spaces
- Perform overhead work requiring full motion use of both hands/arms and securing 30 pounds
- Hand dexterity and strength to operate common hand and power tools
- Stand and walk on pavement/ground for prolonged periods
- Rigorous physical labor: climb, balance, stoop, kneel, bend, push, or pull
Travel Requirements
- Possess a valid driver’s license and be fully insured according to South Carolina law
- Maintain a driving record with less than 6 points
- Travel within Gregory Electric’s territory when required
- Ability to drive both automatic and standard transmission vehicles
- Proven ability to operate a vehicle safely and within legal and regulatory requirements
Work Environment
- Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and vibration
- Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions (heat, humidity, cold, ice, wind)
- Ability to work outdoors continuously for 8 to 16 hours per day
- Able to work overtime when requested
- Moderate to loud noise levels
- Occasional exposure to extreme conditions at job sites
