Utility Design Project Manager
About the role
Weston & Sampson is expanding its practice in the southeast and seeks to add experienced design engineering staff in its Apex, NC office. Ideal candidates should have at least 2 years of professional experience in Utility Design.
Responsibilities
- Aid Project Managers with engineering tasks.
- Create utility design plan sets for transportation and municipal projects according to NCDOT or municipality requirements.
- Develop Utility Construction Special Provisions / Specifications based on NCDOT or municipal utility owner specifications.
- Generate cost/quantity estimates for projects at different design stages.
- Prepare and submit permit packages to state agencies or self-permitting municipalities.
- Occasionally travel within North Carolina for client meetings and project sites, and possibly to other W&S office locations and industry conferences/seminars outside of NC.
- Perform on-site fieldwork, such as verifying existing conditions of utilities, observing contractors and sub-consultants during construction, and documenting as-built conditions.
- Create legible, concise, scaled notes and drawings.
- Represent Weston & Sampson at project meetings, conferences, and professional society events.
- Work independently with minimal supervision and interact with client and utility owner contacts to manage assigned work.
Requirements
- A Bachelor's degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering is required.
- An Master's degree in Civil Engineering is preferred.
- A Professional Engineer (PE) license in North Carolina, or the ability to obtain one, is required for career development.
- Proficiency in MicroStation V8i or OpenRoads is required for developing plan sets and creating utility designs.
- Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D is a plus, but not mandatory.
- Competence in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher.
- Ability to use Microsoft Projects for project scheduling.
- Experience with water lines/mains, sanitary pump stations, force mains, gravity sewers, and site design.
- Knowledge of hydrologic/hydraulic modeling software for water distribution system analysis.
- Experience performing a Utility Conflict Analysis between proposed designs and existing utilities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and organizational abilities.
- A valid driver's license is required.
Qualifications
Experience with NCDOT Engineering Design Standards is preferred.
Ability to read and interpret DOT plans to distinguish between existing and proposed conditions.
Skills
