About the role
The Utilities Maintenance Mechanic position involves performing intermediate skilled work in the maintenance, repair, and replacement of machinery and equipment in a water or wastewater treatment plant and pump stations. This role is performed under regular supervision.
Responsibilities
- Performs preventive maintenance on utility plant equipment and pump stations.
- Assists with the repair of plant and pump station equipment.
- Checks water and wastewater treatment plant and pump stations.
- Performs preventive maintenance on pumps, engines, electric motors and controls, blowers, conveyors, ventilation systems.
- Dismantles and assists in overhauling plant equipment.
- Maintains records.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Requirements
- General knowledge of the installation, repair, and maintenance of the mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical components of water and wastewater treatment and pump station equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the work.
- Skill in the use and care of tools of the trade.
- Ability to determine improper operation of water and wastewater pumping and treatment equipment, and to take proper remedial action.
- Ability to follow oral and written directions.
- Ability to supervise the work of skilled helpers.
- Ability to work under adverse conditions.
Qualifications
- Utilities Maintenance Mechanic I: Graduation from high school and less than 1 year of experience in the repair and maintenance of a variety of water and wastewater pumping station mechanical, electrical and control equipment.
- Utilities Maintenance Mechanic II: Graduation from high school and 3 years of experience in the repair and maintenance of a variety of water and wastewater pumping station mechanical, electrical and control equipment.
- Utilities Maintenance Mechanic III: Graduation from high school and 5 years of experience in the repair and maintenance of a variety of water and wastewater pumping station mechanical, electrical and control equipment.
Skills
- Knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical components of water and wastewater treatment and pump station equipment.
- Ability to use and care for tools of the trade.

- Ability to follow oral and written directions.
