USDA-ARS Vaccine and Bacteriophage Research for Aquatic Health

About the role

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join Dr. Michael Deshotel's laboratory at the Stuttgart National Aquatics Research Center. The participant will work on projects evaluating novel therapeutic compounds, vaccines, and bacteriophages for the treatment and prevention of bacterial diseases affecting the U.S. aquaculture industry.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate novel therapeutic compounds, vaccines, and bacteriophages for the treatment and prevention of bacterial diseases in warmwater fish.
  • Conduct in vivo and in vitro studies to assess the efficacy and toxicity of novel compounds and phages.
  • Collaborate with the principal investigator, support scientists, and technicians to develop and implement research projects.
  • Prepare peer-reviewed publications and present findings at conferences.

Requirements

  • Relevant doctoral degree in Microbiology, Immunology, Physiology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related field in Biological Sciences.
  • Experience with in vivo animal vaccines, antibody assays, flow cytometry, and chromatography.
  • Strong immunology and molecular biology background.
  • A record of peer-reviewed publications.
  • Knowledge of standard molecular, biochemical, and immunological techniques, cell culture-based assays, and PCR.

Qualifications

  • U.S. citizenship only.
  • Doctoral degree in Life Health and Medical Sciences.

Pay

$55,000.00 - $90,000.00 annually.

Schedule

The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of ARS and is contingent on the availability of funds.
