USDA-ARS Sorghum Forage and Grain Quality Traits Fellowship
About the role
The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is seeking a researcher to study and analyze genes, proteins, and biochemical pathways controlling lignin, starch, and flowering in sorghum. The research will focus on the brown midrib (bmr) mutants to improve forage and biomass quality through increased livestock digestibility and bioenergy conversion.
Responsibilities
- Use genomics, biochemistry, physiology, and genetics to analyze genes controlling these traits.
- Study the brown midrib (bmr) mutants for reductions and alterations in lignin deposition.
- Collaborate with an interdisciplinary research team focused on grain and forage improvement.
- Analyze gene function and biochemical pathways associated with plant growth, biomass composition, and crop improvement.
- Develop skills in plant breeding and biotechnology strategies aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity and biomass utilization.
Requirements
The qualified candidate should have received or be currently pursuing a doctoral degree in life health and medical sciences, with prior research experience in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) genetics, molecular biology, or biochemistry preferred.

- Doctoral degree in relevant field.
- Prior research experience in sorghum genetics, molecular biology, or biochemistry.
Skills
- Experience using genomics, genetics, biochemistry, and physiology approaches to study genes involved in crop trait regulation.
- Knowledge of plant breeding and biotechnology strategies aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity and biomass utilization.
Benefits
Stipend range: $70,000.00 – $80,000.00 yearly.
Pay
$70,000.00 – $80,000.00 yearly.
Schedule
Full-time appointment starting October 2026, with flexibility based on availability of funds.
