About the Role

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Partnerships for Data Innovations (PDI) is an enterprise-level data solutions provider within the National Measurement and Monitoring Innovations Project and the Agroecosystem Management Research Unit (AMRU). PDI supports ARS researchers and stakeholders by providing technical assistance to develop, host, and maintain public-facing custom data solutions such as web-based applications, digital research tools, and software that support the ARS core mission.

ARS is the USDA’s chief scientific in-house research agency, delivering cutting-edge tools and solutions for American farmers, producers, industry, and communities to support nourishment, agroecosystem sustainability, and agricultural competitiveness.

Research Project

You will collaborate with the PDI team to train in agile and innovative development of customized data solutions that promote collaboration and stewardship of ARS's research data and knowledge assets. PDI is the only in-house public-facing enterprise-level data solutions provider for ARS scientists.

Learning Objectives

  • Develop, host, and maintain internal and public-facing custom data solutions, including web-based applications, digital research tools, and software.
  • Training in database development, web application development, and software development.
  • Opportunity to request remote training.

Mentor & Appointment Details

The mentor for this opportunity is Kyle Stoltz (kyle.stoltz@usda.gov). The appointment will initially be for one year, renewable upon recommendation and contingent on fund availability. The anticipated start date is September 2026, with flexibility based on various factors.

This is a full-time opportunity. Participants do not become employees of USDA, ARS, or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing or have received an associate's or bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • U.S. citizenship required.

Preferred Skills

  • Educational background in computer sciences or a related field.
  • Experience with agricultural data is a plus.
  • Knowledge of computer programming (Python, HTML, Java, PowerShell) and IT science/security experience.

Pay

Monthly stipend range: $6,617 – $6,680.
