Position Summary
The Director of Software Engineering – Payroll leads the design, execution, and modernization of Walmart’s enterprise payroll ecosystem. The role oversees payroll operations for 1.6 million associates across multiple regions, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and system integrity. It drives the transformation of legacy INFOR systems to modern SAP and cloud architectures while maintaining uninterrupted operations. The Director sets payroll technology strategy, manages cross-functional teams, and ensures alignment with regulatory requirements and enterprise platforms to deliver scalable, secure, and future-ready payroll capabilities.

The role oversees payroll operations for ~1.6M associates across the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Canada. The Director ensures accuracy, compliance, and timeliness in a complex regulatory environment. The Director drives modernization from legacy INFOR mainframe systems to SAP and cloud-native architectures. The Director owns payroll system strategy, data integrity, compliance, and integrations with HR and financial systems. The Director directs cross-functional payroll, engineering, and product teams to align with business and technology strategy.
About the team
The Payroll Modernization (PayMod) team leads the migration of the largest U.S. workforce to a scalable payroll system, managing complex programs with advanced project and stakeholder management. The team delivers efficient, reliable solutions aligned with evolving business needs through disciplined execution, risk mitigation, and process optimization. Members focus on continuous improvement and long-term operational excellence, spanning technical design, capacity planning, and cloud financial management to ensure sustained system reliability and successful outcomes across multiple initiatives.
What you'll do
- Leads end-to-end design, execution, and transformation of Walmart’s payroll ecosystem.
- Oversees payroll operations for ~1.6M associates across the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Canada.
- Ensures accuracy, compliance, and timeliness in a complex regulatory environment.
- Drives modernization from legacy INFOR mainframe systems to SAP and cloud-native architectures.
- Owes payroll system strategy, data integrity, compliance, and integrations with HR and financial systems.
- Directs cross-functional payroll, engineering, and product teams to align with business and technology strategy.
What you'll bring
- Deep expertise in enterprise payroll systems (INFOR, SAP) and large-scale payroll processing.
- Strong software engineering leadership across scalable distributed systems and architecture.
- Advanced knowledge of payroll data structures, calculations, compliance, and multi-jurisdictional regulations.
- Proven experience with high-volume payroll operations and complex scenarios (retro, terminations, garnishments).
- Skilled in payroll system integrations, data reconciliation, and GL/payroll accounting.
- Led major payroll modernization and cloud migration initiatives.
- Strong background in data governance, security, DevOps, CI/CD, and cloud platforms.
- Effective leader of global cross-functional teams with strong stakeholder management.

Minimum Qualifications
- Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 6 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
- Option 2: 8 years’ experience in software engineering or related area. 3 years' supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 4 years' experience in software engineering or related area.
