US State & Local Tax Manager
Position Summary
The U.S. State and Local Tax Manager is responsible for managing the company’s state and local income/franchise tax and sales and use tax functions. This role oversees compliance, provision support, audit management, research, planning, and process improvement across multiple jurisdictions. The position partners closely with accounting, finance, legal, procurement, IT, and business stakeholders to ensure accurate reporting, timely filings, strong internal controls, and effective management of state and local tax risk.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage all aspects of state and local income/franchise tax compliance, including data collection, return review, extension calculations, estimated payments, and filing coordination.
- Oversee state and local sales and use tax compliance, including return review, taxability determinations, exemption certificate administration, accruals, and remittances.
- Monitor changes in state and local tax laws, regulations, and administrative guidance; assess impact and communicate implications to relevant stakeholders.
- Support the annual tax provision process related to state income taxes, including current and deferred tax calculations, apportionment analysis, and supporting documentation.
- Manage state and local tax audits, notices, and inquiries, including coordinating responses, preparing supporting schedules, and interacting with taxing authorities.
- Lead technical research on complex income tax and indirect tax matters such as nexus, apportionment, sourcing, taxability, exemptions, voluntary disclosures, and refund opportunities.
- Identify and implement opportunities to improve processes, automate workflows, enhance controls, and reduce tax exposure and compliance burden.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to review business changes, transactions, system implementations, and new products or services for state and local tax implications.
- Cook up with external advisors and service providers, as needed, on compliance, controversy, planning, and special projects.
- Develop and maintain state tax calendars, audit trackers, process documentation, and filing procedures to support a well-controlled compliance environment.
- Review journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting workpapers related to state and local tax accounts.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to staff or shared service resources supporting state and local tax activities.
- Aid with tax planning initiatives and risk assessments to optimize the company’s state and local tax position while maintaining compliance.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or a related field required.
- CPA, MST, JD, or other relevant tax credential preferred.
- 6+ years of progressive tax experience, including significant hands-on experience with state and local income/franchise tax and sales and use tax.
- Strong knowledge of multistate tax concepts, including nexus, apportionment, allocation, sourcing, taxability, exemptions, and audit procedures.
- Experience supporting state income tax provision calculations and related accounting requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines across numerous jurisdictions.
- Experience with tax research tools, ERP systems, and tax compliance software; familiarity with automation tools is a plus.
- Strong analytical, organizational, project management, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax matters to non-tax stakeholders.
