About the role

Transform Healthcare by diagnosing and treating human disease, illness and injuries while practicing evidence-based medicine. Prescribe medically necessary medications and treatments. Serve on various Carilion and/or hospital committees. Complete necessary documentation for patients' health information records. Deliver high quality, compassionate medical care applying evidence-based medicine to the highest degree possible.

Responsibilities

  • Examine patients using various medical equipment, instruments and tests.
  • Order or perform various tests, analyses and imaging to provide information on patients' condition.
  • Determine patients' conditions based on examination, test and report results.
  • Prescribe and administer drugs, treatments and vaccinations.
  • May perform perinatal care to pregnant women and deliver babies; may perform surgeries and related invasive procedures.
  • Work closely with case management, nursing, and the medical staff to ensure all patients have an appropriate plan of care and ongoing care coordination.
  • Support Joint Commission continuous readiness and compliance.
  • Participate in performance improvement through work with hospital management, the medical staff and employees in areas such as standardization of equipment and supplies, optimal utilization of ancillary services, cost-effective medical resource management, and the application of evidence-based medicine.
  • Complete all required documentation timely and accurately.
  • Report births, deaths, and contagious diseases as required.
  • Conduct, cooperate, support, and collaborate on basic and clinical research.
  • Develop and test new medical techniques.
  • Supervise medical treatment of patients.
  • Supervise physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetists, medical residents, medical students and/or office staff.
  • Participate in teaching and mentoring.

Qualifications

Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical school. Completion of an approved residency program in the specialty of internal medicine or pediatrics. Board certification in internal medicine or pediatrics preferred. Current Virginia Medical License. ACLS, PALS, and CRAMS certifications preferred.
