Location: Banner Health Urgent Care – Zone 9 (multiple clinics in the Phoenix area)

Status: Full-Time (Three 12-hour shifts per week)

About the role

This position supports the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care within Banner Health Urgent Care. The Medical Assistant assists healthcare providers with clinical procedures, patient assessments, and administrative duties to ensure efficient clinic operation. The role requires flexibility, professionalism, and compassionate care in a fast-paced environment. The incumbent will float to other Banner Health Urgent Care clinics within the surrounding area based on operational needs.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares patient for exam and treatment by taking and recording vital signs, symptoms, and other necessary measurements; documents chief complaint and pain scores as appropriate.
  • Reports changes in patient condition to the clinician.
  • Assists providers with exams and minor in-office procedures, including taking blood pressure, documenting respiration and heart rate/pulse, taking temperature, performing phlebotomies, ear irrigation, and EKGs.
  • Acts as a chaperone as needed.
  • Uses universal blood and body fluid precautions and personal protective equipment as required.
  • Prioritizes patient flow through the clinical process.
  • Coordinates and manages patient care, including pre-certifications, referrals, authorizations, prescriptions, and scheduling for clinic, hospital, and ancillary medical treatments.
  • Communicates test results to patients.
  • Acts as a resource to clinicians to provide optimal patient care.
  • Administers medications in accordance with established policies and procedures or as directed.
  • Provides clerical support, including patient/client notifications and documentation (e.g., complete medical records, labs, authorizations, X-rays, hospital records).
  • Ensures complete and accurate billing information for patient encounters in a timely manner.
  • Maintains a clean, functional environment, including cleaning and disinfecting equipment, exam rooms, and storage areas.
  • Disinfects equipment and instruments following sterilization procedures and OSHA guidelines for handling hazardous substances.
  • Performs basic maintenance of equipment and coordinates repairs as needed.
  • Orders and stocks supplies for patient care areas.
  • Manages medication ordering and related tasks (e.g., handling expired medications/equipment and recalls).
  • Develops and maintains effective communication with external and internal customers, exemplifying service orientation and teamwork.
  • Completes all necessary onboarding/orientation activities, including simulation training as directed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
  • Completion of an approved medical assistant training program as defined by state regulations.
  • Active Medical Assistant Certification required, such as:
    • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) with current membership from American Medical Technologists (AMT).
    • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) with current membership from American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).
    • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) with current membership from National Health Career Association (NHA) (test administered after 7/1/2017 only).
    • National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) with current membership from National Certified Competency Testing (NCCT).
  • BLS certification required.
  • Strong computer skills, including experience with medical software.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple changing priorities effectively and organized.
  • For employees working in behavioral health clinical settings serving children: possession of an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintained for the duration of employment; an Arizona Criminal History Affidavit must be signed upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with office medical procedures, treatments, and knowledge of insurance, managed care operations, EMR, and scheduling software.

Schedule

Variable; must be available to work any day of the week, including weekends. Clinics operate from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
