URBAN Farm Recovery Day — Volunteers Needed GROWING HOPE GARDENS
About the Event
Join Growing Hope Gardens for a Free Urban Farm Recovery Day to help restore the farm after an unexpected five-week closure due to serious threats and assaults against team members. The individual responsible is now in custody, and it is safe to reopen. During the closure, crops and seedlings were lost, and essential farm care was delayed. Community help is needed to get the farm growing again.
Responsibilities
- Pruning fruit trees
- Harvesting fresh produce
- Replanting growing areas
- Watering
- Composting
Tasks may vary depending on the farm’s needs that day. No gardening experience is necessary; guidance will be provided.
About Growing Hope Gardens
Since 2019, Growing Hope Gardens has partnered with Community Corporation of Santa Monica, Safe Place for Youth, Holos Communities, and The People Concern to establish 15 urban, organic, regenerative resident food gardens and fruit trees, as well as a 1/4-acre farm, at affordable housing and homeless shelter properties in Los Angeles County. Gardens receive bi-monthly maintenance visits to help them thrive and increase resident knowledge and stewardship. Educational signage on harvesting, care, nutritional content, and suggested use is placed seasonally, and plant-based knowledge is supported through an online portal.
