About BUGS Baltimore Urban Gardening with Students (BUGS)

BUGS is an after-school and summer environmental education enrichment program for 6th-8th graders at The Crossroads School. It aims to strengthen environmental literacy and provide urban youth with educational and recreational experiences. BUGS complements the school day and encourages students to understand, respect, and connect with the natural world.

General Responsibilities

  • Participate in the BUGS Annual Student-Run Farmer’s Market
  • Care for the flock of chickens
  • Create and execute environmental education lessons
  • Coordinate program events
  • Guide students in making goods for the Farmer’s Market
  • Plan and lead environmental-based enrichment activities
  • Support increased environmental literacy and connection to the outdoors
  • Communicate with parents and support student achievement
  • Create and maintain partnerships with relevant organizations
  • Assist with administrative tasks

Required Skills

  • Experience or willingness to learn about caring for a flock of chickens
  • Enjoy working with students
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills
  • Positive and engaging teaching style
  • Knowledge of social-emotional learning techniques
  • Familiarity with Baltimore's environmental and natural history
  • Interest in urban conservation and environmental issues
  • Good public speaking and communication skills

Other Requirements

  • Pass a background check
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien
  • Have a valid driver’s license and good driving record
