About the Role

Leggett & Platt is seeking an Upholsterer at our Genesis Seating location in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This role is responsible for production, quality, and safety standards related to upholstering and assembling fabric and leather furniture components.

Responsibilities

  • Use job-specific hand tools, staple guns, and staple pullers.
  • Adhere wood to foam and fabric to foam using water-based adhesive.
  • Pull and stretch fabrics to achieve a wrinkle-free finish on complex upholstery forms.
  • Interpret specifications, instructions, and job orders.
  • Meet production schedules and inspect production materials.
  • Recommend improvements in production methods, equipment performance, product quality, and safety.
  • Analyze and resolve work problems or assist team members in solving them.
  • Train and develop new and current employees on the product line.
  • Ensure quality verifications and procedures are followed.
  • Coordinate with team members to operate the cell efficiently.
  • Understand non-conforming product procedures.
  • Ensure safety standards are followed and report unsafe conditions.
  • Maintain work area cleanliness and organization.
  • Complete required paperwork and cycle counts accurately.
  • Perform preventive maintenance as required.
  • Communicate quality concerns with supervisors, engineering, and materials.

Requirements

  • One to three months of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and product information.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
  • Knowledge and experience with fabrics, vinyls, and leathers is a plus.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to stand, use hands to handle tools, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Frequently required to talk or hear.
  • Occasionally required to walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

  • Regularly works near moving mechanical parts.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
