University Public Safety Officer

The Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) leads all public safety functions within the university, including police, security, and emergency management, and offers an integrated approach to safety and security, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. DPSS combines Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint operations to provide students, visitors, faculty, and staff with a safe and secure environment.

About the role

Michigan Medicine Security Services is seeking University Public Safety Officers to report to a Security Sergeant. This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Michigan and the Police Officers Association of Michigan (POAM).

Responsibilities

• Ensure public safety, protect assets, and act as the primary liaison with state and local police, fire, and security agencies; act calmly in emergency situations and use emergency equipment
• De-escalate potentially violent and non-violent situations with medical staff; help maneuver persons who may be combative, intoxicated, or unconscious; restrain individuals as needed
• Patrol the medical center and off-site health system buildings; monitor fire, infant protection, security, and access control alarm systems
• Detect safety hazards and criminal elements
• Use customer service skills and an inclusive mindset to respectfully communicate and work with all community members
• Maintain confidentiality in all matters
• Prepare incident and security reports
• Ascend and descend multiple flights of stairs as part of routine patrol
• Provide services such as escorts, wayfinding, unlocks, motorist assists, well-being checks, fund transports, property control, and traffic and crowd control
• Move equipment such as barricades and fire extinguishers

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent
• One (1) year of experience in security, fire, military, customer service, or emergency management
• Experience with enforcement of fire, safety, and security practices
• Skill set in handling emergency situations and using associated equipment
• Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and keyboarding
• Valid driver’s license with a driving record of fewer than 6 points
• Must pass a comprehensive public safety background investigation, drug screening, psychological evaluation, and physical examination

Pay

Effective 12/21/25, the salary range will be $48,942.40 - $59,550.40, depending on qualifying experience and subject to POAM contractual terms and University policies.

Schedule

These positions work onsite patrolling the medical center and off-site health system buildings.

• All members of the DPSS team are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) under The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. You are required to report any Clery reportable offenses that come to your attention.
• DPSS employees must complete Clery Compliance training within 14 days of employment and annually thereafter.
