Public Safety Officer

About the Role

To provide service and information to students, employees, and visitors; enforce the rules and regulations of the Tyler Junior College District pertaining to the operation and parking of vehicles on college property; and help safeguard the property of the Tyler Junior College District.

Responsibilities

• Enforce regulations pertaining to the parking of vehicles on college-controlled property.
• Direct traffic and patrol college-controlled property to safeguard buildings and property.
• Report suspicious activity to the Police Department’s Emergency Communication Center.
• Provide service to students, employees, and visitors, including writing reports.
• Check permits on vehicles entering and parking on campus; direct the flow of traffic and parking of cars.
• Issue parking permits and Police Department parking violation citations.
• Patrol buildings and grounds to check for fires, water leaks, potential security and safety hazards, and general building security; report all irregularities, emergencies, or suspicious activity.
• Ensure all personnel entering the campus are properly identified; issue visitor badges and maintain a log of all issued badges.
• Provide directions and general information to visitors.
• Patrol buildings and grounds on foot or in a vehicle to provide security and prevent crime.
• Write reports on incidents occurring on campus.
• Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Valid driver’s license and eligibility to drive a college-owned and/or leased motor vehicle.
• Successfully pass a thorough background investigation.
• Ability to provide credible testimony in a court of law.
• Pass a twelve-month evaluation period after field training.
• Complete all phases of the hiring and selection process as outlined in department policy 401C.
• Successfully complete a minimum 12-month evaluation period immediately following field training.

Working Conditions

• Exposure to variable weather conditions.
• Ability to work day, evening, or night shifts, including holidays and varying days off.
• Subject to emergency recall during man-made or natural disasters and unusual occurrences on campus.
• Work involves a degree of hazard.
• Exposure to office environment, patient care units, human/animal blood, body fluids, tissues, harmful chemicals, radiation, and animals.

Supervision

Work is performed under the general supervision of the chain of command of the police department, typically a Senior Guard/Senior Public Safety Officer or a Sergeant. Supervision is usually available in person or by radio. Work requires the ability to make frequent minor decisions and occasional decisions of some significance. Work is reviewed for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with departmental policy and procedure.
