Position Overview
The Public Safety Officer's primary duties are to patrol buildings and grounds within an assigned area on foot or in a vehicle; secure and unsecure buildings; report unusual or suspicious circumstances or conditions; activate and de-activate alarm systems; monitor and report obvious malfunctions in building physical plant mechanical systems such as heating, air conditioning, lighting, water leaks, etc. Provide assistance, directions, and information to University personnel and visitors. Detect and report any non-University affiliated persons in areas where it is not permissible. Render basic first aid as appropriate and request medical assistance as necessary. Perform any and all related duties as required or assigned.
Responsibilities
- Patrol the campus by foot or by vehicle and answer calls to perform locking and unlocking functions, check alarms, or checking parking issues.
- Investigate and record irregularities which occur during assigned shifts and take necessary action within limits or prescribed policies and procedures to correct the situation.
- Prepare written reports of accidents or irregularities.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Possess High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- Must possess a valid Driver's License with favorable driving record at time of appointment.
- Ability to pass a drug screen and police background investigation including a motor vehicle check.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Effective interpersonal skills to resolve a wide variety of sensitive situations.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality, exercise sound judgment and work independently.
- A strong commitment to providing top-quality customer service.
- The ability to interact professionally and effectively with diverse publics is required.
- Demonstrated ability to think and act effectively in emergency and sensitive situations.
- Prior related experience (preferably in campus security) or comparable formal education is preferred.
