About the role

The position involves patrolling, responding to emergencies, directing traffic, and providing security services. It includes supervisory responsibilities and may involve administrative tasks.

Responsibilities

• Patrol assigned areas on foot, by vehicle, or by other means to deter, detect, and respond to criminal activity and other emergency situations.
• Respond to calls for assistance to ensure that persons and property are adequately protected.
• Conduct initial investigations in order to preserve and gather evidence.
• Direct traffic at intersections, crosswalks, and other critical points during peak traffic periods.
• Provide in-service training and engage in crime prevention activities.
• Assist with the management of all police and security activities for the Department.
• Evaluate the performance of staff and make recommendations regarding performance evaluations, probationary or other terminations.
• Develop and maintain a close working relationship with other law enforcement agencies.
• Support accreditation, policy development, and standards compliance.
• Attend meetings at the request of the Chief of Police or other command staff.

Requirements

• One year of permanent service as a University Police Communications & Security Specialist 1 or 2 OR 60 college semester credit hours OR two years of active United States military service with an honorable discharge OR four years of United States military reserve or any state National Guard service OR two years of experience as a police officer within New York State with a valid New York State Municipal Police Training Course certification approved by the New York State Municipal Police Training Council OR two years of experience as a peace officer within New York State with a valid New York State Municipal Police Training Course certification approved by the New York State Municipal Police Training Council.
• Substitution: 30 college semester credit hours can substitute for one year of the required experience.
• Three years of permanent service as a University Police Officer 1 for promotion to University Police Officer 2.
• One year of permanent service as a University Police Officer 2 or University Police Investigator 2 for promotion to University Police Officer 3.

Qualifications

• Completion of a police academy or equivalent training program.
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to work independently and exercise independent judgment.
• Substantial contact with the public and other law enforcement personnel.
• Knowledge of traffic laws and ability to enforce them.
• Ability to communicate effectively and handle stressful situations.
• Physical fitness to perform the duties of the position.
