This is a full-time, exempt position designated as a “responsible employee” and a “designated position” which may require working during an emergency closing. This is a restricted position subject to availability of funding.

About the Role

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Housing – Maintenance, this position will work independently to perform moderately complex building maintenance and oversee the work of Senior Trades Technician(s) and Trades/Utility Workers. The department’s objective is to provide high levels of excellence and professionalism in rendering superior customer-focused services to residential students, with close attention to detail and a “students first” attitude.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor the work order system, verify completion of work, and prioritize work order responses
  • Ensure proper supplies and inventory are maintained
  • Assist with contractors and schedule preventative maintenance
  • Oversee and manage a diverse group of maintenance employees with a wide range of skills
  • Enforce OSHA and VOSH safety regulations
  • Complete routine tasks such as time sheet approval using a computer
  • Work primarily a daytime schedule with some nights and weekends as necessary
  • Be on-call on a rotating basis
  • Perform moderately complex building maintenance in areas including but not limited to: water heaters, door locks, plumbing, HVAC, lighting, and roofing
  • Use handheld and power tools such as hammers, drills, wrenches, sockets, power saws, voltage meters, allen wrenches, and pliers

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent education/experience
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Experience performing building maintenance
  • Experience performing moderately complex maintenance
  • Experience using computers
  • Ability to manage a diverse group of maintenance employees
  • Thorough understanding of the trades and preventative maintenance
  • Conflict resolution skills and ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and parents
  • Willingness to learn new skills and systems (e.g., electronic lock systems, building systems)
  • Organizational skills
  • Ability to work a daytime schedule and be on-call on a rotating basis
  • Ability to abide by all safety policies and wear personal protective equipment as required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completed courses or certifications related to building maintenance or skilled trades
  • Licensed in a skilled trade (electrical, HVAC, plumbing, etc.)
  • Experience working in a university or residential setting
  • Significant experience in a specialized building trade (e.g., electrical, HVAC, plumbing)

Pay

Starting salary range: $56,746 to $70,931, commensurate with education and experience.

Conditions of Employment

  • This is a classified position with a 12-month probationary period for new and returning classified employees
