About the role

Patrols assigned areas diligently, giving particular attention to and often rechecking locations where problems have been frequent. Patrols buildings checking for fire, prowlers, vandalism, and other unusual activities. Makes rounds of assigned area at least three times during the shift, appropriately documents and verbally reports discrepancies. Sustains attentiveness and promptly responds to all emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Patrols assigned areas, focusing on locations with frequent problems; checks for fire, prowlers, vandalism, and unusual activities (30%)
  • Responds punctually to all assignments and immediately to emergencies (20%)
  • Monitors alarms and CCTV (closed circuit television) (10%)
  • Performs duties of a Public Safety Officer (non-arrest powers), assists in maintaining peace and decorum, tickets unauthorized vehicles, escorts persons as required, and detains suspicious persons (10%)
  • Operates two-way radio and responds per Dispatcher’s direction (10%)
  • Courteously assists all persons seeking directions, information, or assistance (10%)
  • Informs the relieving officer of all relevant information and concerns for proper job performance (10%)

Requirements

  • High school diploma and three years of experience in fire prevention, safety, or security activities
  • Certification by the Department of Public Safety, in accordance with Section 23-6-430 of the 1976 South Carolina Code of Laws
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Computer literacy
  • Familiarity with state, county, and city laws of South Carolina
  • Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with the general public
  • Knowledge of security methods for buildings and grounds
  • Ability to work overtime as required

  • Knowledge of safety, security, and fire protection practices and techniques
  • Ability to act quickly and intelligently in emergency situations
  • Ability to adjust to fluctuating situations
  • Ability to investigate accidents, disturbances, and violations

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time (Continuous: 6-8 hours per shift)
  • Ability to lift materials up to 50 lbs, unassisted (Infrequent: 0-2 hours per shift)
  • Ability to lift, drag, or pull persons to safety, weighing up to 300 lbs, assisted (Infrequent)
  • Ability to hear and recognize various sounds within noisy background areas (Continuous)
  • Ability to maintain 20/40 vision in both eyes, corrected (Continuous)
  • Ability to climb stairs to the top floor of any building within the institution (Infrequent)
  • Olfactory sense must be intact to smell unusual odors (Continuous)
  • Ability to carry heavy objects, such as persons, a distance of 15 to 20 feet in emergency situations (Infrequent)
  • Ability to engage in physical confrontations with suspected offenders (Infrequent)
  • Ability to sit (Infrequent)

Pay

Pay Grade: University-GEN05
Pay Range: $33,800.00 - $43,900.00 - $54,100.00 per year

Schedule

  • Scheduled Weekly Hours: 40
