UNIV - Clinical Instructor, Heart Transplantation and MCS - Surgery: Cardiothoracic Surgery

Job Description

The Medical University of South Carolina, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, is seeking a Clinical Instructor to provide patient care in cardiac transplantation and mechanical circulatory support. The department has experienced significant growth in advanced heart failure programs, including acute MCS devices, cardiogenic shock, durable LVAD therapy, and heart transplantation, particularly from donation after cardiac death (DCD).

• Primary clinical duties include heart transplants, especially complex reoperative cases and DCD transplants, and the implantation of acute and durable mechanical circulatory support devices.
• Participation in the pre-operative evaluation process, including weekly transplant selection committee meetings, quality meetings, and operative and postoperative care, is required.
• Opportunities for involvement in cutting-edge clinical trials and research, including digital health, outcomes research, and artificial intelligence, are available.

About the Role

This role is ideal for candidates who have completed an accredited cardiothoracic surgical training program and are interested in surgical heart failure. Applicants must be eligible for a South Carolina Medical License.

Physical Requirements

• Frequent: Perform job functions in a seated position, walk, climb stairs, climb ladders, work indoors, work in confined/cramped spaces, bend at the waist, twist at the waist, squat, perform pinching operations, use both hands/arms, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, use both legs, reach in all directions, use fingers, maintain tactile sensory functions, maintain olfactory sensory function, lift and carry 150 lbs., lift and carry up to 75 lbs. from floor level to height of 36 inches, lift and carry up to 75 lbs. from height of 36 inches to floor level, lift and carry patients weighing up to 300 lbs., assist in lifting, push/pull objects up to 200 lbs., maintain 20/40 vision, correct, see and recognize objects close at hand, see and recognize objects at a distance, match or discriminate between colors, determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception, maintain peripheral vision capabilities, maintain hearing acuity, with correction, perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements, be qualified physically (by medical personnel) for respirator use, initially and annually.

Qualifications

• MD or equivalent degree.
• Eligible for a South Carolina Medical License.

Skills

• Ability to work rotating shifts.
• Ability to work overtime as required.
• Ability to learn and use new processes, tools, and equipment as required.
