Job Overview

Performs clerical and receptionist functions for the unit, in accordance with Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital policies and procedures, answers inquiries of a general nature by nursing staff, physicians, patients and families, and carries out principles of positive guest relations.

Qualifications

  • Clerical experience
  • Preferred: High school diploma

Scheduling Requirements

  • Evening Shift - 3pm to 11:30pm
  • Rotating weekends and holidays required
  • Part-Time

Essential Functions

  • Answering the telephone within 4 rings professionally
  • Answering the call bell via intercom system professionally
  • Activating the paging system for both routine and emergency use
  • Coordinating patient admissions, transfers and discharges with other departments
  • Competently utilizing the TDS computer system for the following purposes: written order entry, report retrieval, census updates related to admissions, transfers and discharges, as well as documenting and updating patient allergies, conditions transport and diet
  • Accepting and scheduling appointments for patients, photocopying medical records per policy and maintaining a log of the unit's activity
  • Following Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital policies and procedures related to dress code, reporting to work on time, adhering to mandatory annual training requirements, attending Unit Clerk meetings, using appropriate ID badge, and patient confidentiality
  • Applying the knowledge and skills necessary as they relate to the patient population served on his/her assigned unit
  • Demonstrating good communication and customer service skills as they relate to the patient population served
  • Demonstrating an awareness of patient safety initiatives at RWJUH, including but not limited to: The current National Patient Safety Goals, Federal, state and voluntary regulatory standards, Unit or departmental specific safety initiatives
  • Participating in the Infection Prevention and at least one other patient safety initiative while exhibiting an understanding of and compliance with RWJUH protocols, policies and procedures
  • Demonstrating proper handwashing techniques and participation in unit or department-specific infection prevention projects
  • Handwritten information is readable when assessed
  • Adhering to the current RWJUH Prohibited Abbreviations, Acronyms and Symbol listing
  • Reporting errors, high risk events and near-misses to his/her immediate supervisor for proper follow-up
  • Completing online patient safety educational program with a score of 80 or higher
  • Demonstrating understanding of information communicated through newsletters, bulletin boards, and memos
