About the role
Preferred Capital Management has a unique and exciting opportunity to lead a sow farm near Goodhue, MN. In this role as Unit Manager, you will have direct responsibility for all daily operations of a sow unit. These responsibilities include all aspects of pig production, staff management and unit upkeep.
Responsibilities
- Oversees all areas of personnel management:
- Recruits, hires and disciplines all production personnel.
- Manages labor budget for sow unit.
- Trains and evaluates all employees.
- Prepares daily, weekly and monthly work schedules.
- Ensures payroll and other data requirements are occurring timely.
- Enforces a culture of safety and animal welfare.
- Enforces without exception the bio-security program.
- Solves any personnel conflicts.
- Communicate expectations of the sow unit.
- Makes regular visits with crew to ensure good communication and teamwork.
- Encourages further education of employees.
- Oversees all areas of production:
- Makes sure farrowing, pregnancy checks, and breeding expectations are met.
- Communicates with production lead and other departments within PCM.
- Complies with Proposition 12 housing protocols.
- Regulates environmental controls for unit, including alarm systems.
- Manages feeding systems and strategies.
- Coordinates health program with veterinarian.
- Makes sure medication usage is appropriate.
- Makes sure semen usage and orders are managed.
- Makes sure gilt flow plan is implemented.
- Makes sure wean schedule is followed.
- Understands and implements expectations of the unit (production, personnel and financial).
- Makes fiscally responsible decisions.
- Supervises maintenance of facility and upkeep of the site.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED diploma; or equivalent related experience.
- Leadership experience with a swine or livestock role.
- Strong communication skills; thorough and attentive to details; able to prioritize and multitask; proactive and deadline-oriented.
- Ability to read and understand work procedures, safety rules, and operating and maintenance instructions.
- Ability to interact effectively with employees, veterinarians, owners, vendors, and all levels of the organization.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to work every third weekend.
- Must have valid driver’s license.
Qualifications
- Lead or management experience on a farm of 2,500+ sows or equivalent related experience.
