Responsibilities

  • Works under the supervision of a nurse or provider to deliver patient care to emergency room patients.
  • Prepares patients for examinations, takes vital signs, obtains specimens, sets-up rooms with necessary supplies and equipment, and assists physicians and nurses during treatments.
  • Maintains written records and reports which comprise the patient’s medical record, maintains chart forms for physician and nursing personnel, and files reports from ancillary departments pertaining to each patient.
  • Performs EMT-Intermediate or Paramedic duties as applicable, including accessing venous circulation, drawing laboratory studies, providing crutch use instructions, obtaining EKGs, vital signs, visual acuity, applying simple dressings, and assisting with patient care.
  • Assists with ambulance transfers, copies and assembles documentation for admissions or transfers, and answers phone calls to refer to appropriate staff.
  • Completes Quick-Registration in CPSI to register ED patients, assesses patient changes in condition, and reports to the nurse.
  • Participates in required continuous training and education, including department-specific requirements.
  • Maintains the work area and ED Waiting Room in an appropriate manner, maintains departmental policy and procedure manuals and unit files, orders and maintains supplies, avoids waste, utilizes time and supplies efficiently, maintains ancillary department reports, and orders proper tests from ancillary departments.
  • Transports or escorts patients to examination areas, treatment rooms, nursing units, the morgue, etc., and transports stable patients requiring telemetry throughout the hospital.
  • Performs emergency procedures and demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served within the unit.

Qualifications

  • Education: High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Licensed Nursing Assistant - OR - Emergency Medical Technician (EMT); CPR Certification.
  • Skills: Medical Terminology; Computer Skills; Communication Skills; Cardiac Rhythm recognition.
