About the role

As a Unit Coordinator in the Emergency Department at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Milton, you’ll work at the center of department activity, partnering with nurses, providers, and support staff to help maintain organization, communication, and flow. Your role is essential in supporting both patient care delivery and the overall operations of the department.

Schedule

• 24 hours per week
• Option 1: 2 shifts of 12 hours (3p–3a or 7p–7a)
• Option 2: 3 shifts of 8 hours (3p–3a or 7p–7a)
• Weekend rotations included

Responsibilities

• Provide administrative support to clinical staff, patients, and families
• Manage front desk operations, including communication, coordination, and information flow
• Support department efficiency and patient throughput
• Collaborate closely with the Charge Nurse and care team to prioritize tasks and respond to real-time needs
• Serve as a central point of contact to keep the team informed, organized, and connected
• Answer phones in compliance with hospital policies and procedures
• Communicate effectively with patients and their families
• Assemble and update patient medical records
• Update patient information in the hospital computer system
• Enter billing charges for patients in the computer system
• Retrieve appropriate patient medical records and test results
• Send specimens to the Laboratory and perform order entry in the hospital computer system as needed
• Demonstrate skills and judgment necessary to provide direct care to patients under the direction of licensed personnel
• May participate in the delivery of emergency care under the direction of a registered nurse or physician
• Consider specific cultural beliefs and practices when caring for patients; utilize interpreter services for patients with limited English proficiency
• Collaborate, cooperate, and communicate with other healthcare providers to ensure quality and continuity of care
• Provide care appropriate to the age groups of patients regularly served
• Maintain a safe work environment and actively participate in hospital safety programs and initiatives
• Adhere to universal precautions
• Actively participate in unit-based Quality Improvement (Q.I.), Performance Improvement studies, and unit meetings
• Attend and/or participate in in-house or outside training programs to improve and augment skills and knowledge
• Assist in ordering and maintaining adequate levels of supplies
• Communicate arrival times for all surgical patients via pre-op phone calls
• Process patients and their representatives upon arrival to the unit
• Assist with transport of patients leaving the area when necessary
• Input data worksheets
• May arrange ambulance transport for patients
• Work effectively with physicians who utilize the unit
• Communicate effectively with physicians' office staff when necessary
• May be required to perform similar or related duties on an emergency basis or as designated by the department or supervisor

Requirements

• Equivalent to the completion of high school, plus 3 to 12 months of related experience
• Excellent communication skills
• Ability to type
• Ability to work in a busy environment
• Medical terminology preferred
• Experience with Microsoft 365 and Epic systems preferred
• The nature of the tasks/responsibilities may expose you to blood and body fluids; standard precautions for infection control are required

Pay

Pay range: $19.50 - $26.24 per hour. Actual compensation is determined based on factors such as seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, and other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices.
