Unit Clerk
Job Overview
Performs clerical and receptionist functions for the unit, in accordance with Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital policies and procedures, answers inquiries of a general nature by nursing staff, physicians, patients and families, and carries out principles of positive guest relations.
About the Role
Performs the following receptionist functions for the nursing unit in accordance with Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital policies and procedures:
- Answering the telephone within 4 rings professionally
- Answering the call bell via intercom system professionally
- Activating the paging system for both routine and emergency use
- Coordination of patient admissions, transfers and discharges with other departments
Responsibilities
Demonstrates the ability to perform clerical functions required on the nursing unit in accordance with Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital policies and procedures by competently utilizing the TDS computer system for the following purposes:
- written order entry
- report retrieval
- census updates related to admissions, transfers and discharges
- as well as documenting and updating patient allergies, conditions transport and diet
Accepts and schedules appointments for patients, photocopies medical records per policy and maintains a log of the unit's activity
Fulfills Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital policies and procedures related to dress code, reporting to work on time, adhering to mandatory annual training requirements, attending Unit Clerk meetings, use of appropriate ID badge, and patient confidentiality
Applies the knowledge and skills necessary as they relate to the patient population served on his/her assigned unit
Displays good communication and customer service skills as they relate to the patient population served
Shows an awareness of patient safety initiatives at RWJUH, including but not limited to: The current National Patient Safety Goals, Federal, state and voluntary regulatory standards, Unit or departmental specific safety initiatives
Displays proper handwashing techniques and participates in unit or department-specific infection prevention projects
Reports errors, high risk events and near-misses to his/her immediate supervisor for proper follow-up
Completes an online patient safety educational program with a score of 80 or higher
Understands information communicated through newsletters, bulletin boards, and memos
Requirements
High school diploma
Clerical experience
Qualifications

Scheduling Requirements: Evening Shift - 3pm to 11:30pm Rotating weekends and holidays required Part-Time
