Underwriting Assistant

About the role
The Underwriting Assistant supports our Excess & Surplus lines book of general/excess liability, garage, and professional liability business. This role provides Underwriters with technical and clerical support throughout the underwriting life cycle—from pre-submission through policy issuance and renewal—ensuring prudent underwriting decisions on new business, renewals, and endorsements.
Responsibilities
- Identify key issues in the underwriting decision-making process with guidance from the underwriter.
- Utilize appropriate resources to assist in the analytical process, including making formal recommendations to underwriters on account management needs.
- Identify and evaluate exposures for each risk.
- Perform analysis using relevant information to assess endorsement and account acceptability.
- Issue premium and non-premium bearing endorsements.
- Adhere to Underwriting Guidelines and Service Level Agreements.
- Follow up with underwriters and brokers on outstanding information.
- Support day-to-day transactions for multiple underwriting team members and agency partners.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with underwriters, customers, and business partners to enhance the customer experience (e.g., researching and resolving issues, responding to inquiries).
- Demonstrate a strong sense of urgency in recognizing customer needs.
- Apply judgment and negotiate on more complex accounts and processes.
- Quote accounts within authority limits by reviewing exposures, experience rating, updating account information, and adjusting pricing.
- Examine inspection reports, prior audits, and endorsements, referring any issues to underwriters.
- Effectively manage and balance multiple demands in a high-volume, time-sensitive environment.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; college coursework or degree preferred.
- Experience with Professional Liability or Commercial Casualty coverages is a plus.
- Strong oral and written communication skills with a positive attitude.
- Ability to provide well-documented, easily interpreted written referrals.
- Detail-oriented with initiative to work in a fast-paced team environment.
- Passion for delivering exceptional customer service.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- High sense of urgency and ability to thrive in a high-volume, time-sensitive environment.
- Computer literate, including proficiency in Word, Excel, and project management tools.

- Some market experience preferred but not required.
- This is an in-office, in-person role.
Pay
Base Salary Range: $55,000 - $62,000. The actual salary will be determined by factors such as scope, complexity, location, skills, education, training, credentials, and experience. Eligible to participate in the annual discretionary bonus program.
