Gesa Credit Union is dedicated to empowering its communities through its team of passionate professionals. The Underwriter I plays a crucial role in evaluating and approving consumer loan applications, ensuring compliance with underwriting standards and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
- Apply critical thinking skills and solid lending principles to evaluate and approve loan offers within delegated authority
- Evaluate and mitigate risk while maintaining profitability associated with extending credit requests
- Construct loan offers in accordance with loan policy under general guidance of a Sr. Underwriter or Manager
- Identify and recommend additional lending opportunities to increase relationships with members
- Provide accurate pricing and terms to dealerships in a courteous/professional manner
- Maintain compliance with legal requirements, lending regulations, and internal policies and procedures
- Maintain positive relationships with colleagues and business partners
- Ensure confidentiality of information received directly or indirectly
- Adhere to all local, state, and federal laws/regulatory requirements as related to functional areas including Truth in Lending, Reg B, Reg Z, and Bank Secrecy Act
- Develop knowledge and skills through formal training classes or on-the-job experience
- Display mutual respect, trust, and dignity, acting in the best interest of the credit union
- Lead by example by always displaying solid ethics and integrity
- Ensure all issues are handled in a fair, legal, and consistent manner
Requirements
- Maintain up-to-date and comprehensive knowledge of all laws, credit union products, services, policies and procedures regarding areas of responsibility
- Participate in and support a team environment
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and business partners
- Demonstrate ability to make decisions in a timely manner and articulate the reasoning for decisions
- Demonstrate ability to prioritize and manage multiple demands effectively

- Effectively communicate and receive ideas and information, both orally and in writing
- Operate standard office equipment, computer and lending programs and programs related to areas of responsibility
- Work outside of business hours, including weekends (Sundays included) and holidays
- Demonstrate flexibility and openness; willing to change priorities, accept and act on input from supervisor, and meet changing demands
- Develop and/or improve processes, implement, and administer policies and procedures, and organize and present information
- Maintain a positive and professional image through effective verbal and written communication
- Make quality judgments and decisions in a timely manner with extreme attention to detail
Qualifications
- High School degree, GED, or equivalent experience required
- A minimum of one (1) year in managing client relationships or handling document processing required
- One (1) to two (2) years of similar or related exposure to indirect lending/financial services preferred
- Advanced knowledge of FICO preferred
- Advanced knowledge of CUDL, Dealer Track and Route One programs preferred
- A valid Driver’s License is required
