Underwriter
About the role
The organization is hiring two (2) Underwriters to underwrite individual life insurance contracts ranging up to $500,000. The roles are fully remote and the current team members are located on the east coast, though the client is open to candidates from other parts of the country.
Responsibilities
- Appraise, classify, and take action to approve or decline applications for new insurance, changes of plan, conversions, exchanges, reinstatements, and additions of benefits.
- Determine extra premiums for medical impairments and special hazards such as aviation, occupation, foreign residence and travel, and unusual avocations.
- Classify each insurance applicant to eliminate adverse selection while maintaining equitable mortality.
- Communicate with field force and Home Office personnel regarding insurance applications and adjustments.
- Answer routine inquiries from other departments and field force concerning the underwriting policies, practices, and procedures related to individual applications.
Requirements
- BS or BA degree.
- LOMA and ALU courses.
- 2-5 years of individual life underwriting experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy.
- Ability to understand and apply medical knowledge to insurance applications.
- Knowledge of federal and state insurance regulations.
- Problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Good business judgment/risk assessment skills.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Attention to detail.
Skills
- Knowledge of KofC policies and insurance products/offerings.

Pay
The wage range for this role takes into account a broad array of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to: skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. The range below applies as long as the work is performed in Connecticut; the Knights of Columbus reserves the right to adjust the wage range if the position is performed in another location. At the Knights of Columbus, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $70,500-$120,000.
