Accountabilities
- Underwrite new business and renewal accounts within the assigned geographic territory, applying sound risk selection and underwriting judgment.
- Manage an assigned book of business and work toward profitability, loss ratio, renewal retention, rate change, and in-force premium objectives.
- Develop, strengthen, and maintain productive relationships with independent agencies across the territory.
- Analyze account information, document underwriting decisions thoroughly, and make recommendations within established authority levels.
- Collaborate with Business Development teams to support growth strategies, agency development, point-of-sale presentations, and responsive customer service.
- Communicate underwriting appetite clearly to agency partners while monitoring hit ratios, new business volume, production targets, and overall profitability.
- Identify opportunities to improve underwriting principles, techniques, processes, and risk appetite based on market and portfolio insights.
- Ensure compliance with applicable insurance filings, regulatory requirements, and internal underwriting standards.
- Use internal systems and reporting tools to monitor book performance and ensure production objectives are achieved throughout the policy term.
- Develop a detailed understanding of agency needs, personnel, target markets, contracted insurers, and business opportunities, maintaining accurate records of agency interactions.
- Conduct agency evaluations and partner with Business Development to establish and achieve agency-specific goals.
- Travel extensively throughout the assigned territory, including agency visits and other business meetings, with travel potentially reaching 50% of the time.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
- Demonstrated experience in workers’ compensation underwriting, preferably with exposure to higher-hazard industries such as construction and heavy manufacturing.
- Experience working with independent insurance agents or in an agency-focused marketing environment is preferred.
- CPCU, CIC, or AU designation is preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel.
- Strong analytical, interpersonal, negotiation, and decision-making skills, with the ability to evaluate complex risks and make commercially sound recommendations.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build credibility and communicate effectively with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Self-motivated, results-oriented, and comfortable working independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative team.
- Strong relationship-management and customer-service capabilities, with the ability to become a trusted business partner to agency stakeholders.
- Able to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, adapt to changing requirements, and remain composed in high-pressure situations.
- Strong organizational and managerial skills, including the ability to work effectively with people across different personalities, communication styles, and professional backgrounds.
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively within the assigned territory, including over-the-road travel of up to 50% of the time.
