Underground Transmission Line Design Engineer

WSP is seeking a Transmission Line Design Engineer to join the Underground Transmission Line group in our Foxborough, Massachusetts office. The role involves all aspects of underground transmission line design for new lines, relocations, and upgrades, as well as technical assistance for utility, industrial, and commercial-scale projects.

Responsibilities

• Assist in reviewing third-party design documents, procurement lists, and project plans.
• Participate in incorporating future-ready techniques, concept development, and design requirements, including equipment sizing, cabling, AC/DC panel design, and conduit/trenching strategies.
• Support senior engineers with research and recommendations for design requirements and field equipment applications.
• Verify site characteristics and provide technical assistance on engineering, design, testing, maintenance, and construction procedures.
• Develop electrical calculations for loads, equipment sizing, feeder sizing, voltage drop, grounding, lighting circuits, and power distribution.
• Maintain quality control standards for accurate measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.
• Work individually or as part of a cross-functional team to execute project work, including installations, cost calculations, and compliance documentation.
• Contribute to technical reports and presentations explaining research and findings.
• Conduct engineering studies and surveys to address design and construction challenges or plan for future needs.
• Assist in analyzing field investigation data and developing action plans for low- to mid-level risk mitigation.
• Collaborate with engineers and disciplines on projects involving electrical infrastructure authorities.
• Adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and perform additional responsibilities as required.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience).
• 3 to 5 years of relevant post-education experience in designing power transmission and distribution systems in utility or industrial/commercial environments.
• Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification.
• Strong command of the English language with effective written and oral communication skills.
• Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management, including rehabilitation and new design.
• Ability to coordinate with agency regulators and understand compliance requirements.
• Knowledge of relevant engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, and regulations.
• Interpersonal and communication skills for engaging with engineering and non-engineering audiences.
• Self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Ability to learn new techniques, work independently, and comply with company policies.
• Moderate proficiency with technical writing, office automation, spreadsheets, and design software (e.g., CADD, Aspen, CAPE, ETAP, AutoCAD Electrical).
• Critical thinking and problem-solving skills for applying technical knowledge to reach effective solutions.
• Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to WSP’s health, safety, and compliance policies.
• Flexibility to work extended schedules as required by project needs, with occasional travel.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in cable/conductor selection from desired line ratings.
• Experience in underground or overhead line/feeder routing.
• Willingness to conduct in-person project site reviews.
• Interest in pursuing Electrical or Civil Professional Engineering (PE) certification in the U.S.

Pay

Expected salary range: $85,200–$136,300. WSP USA provides this range based on education, experience, skills, internal equity, and geographic location. The final offer may vary depending on individual circumstances.
