About the role
Sumter Utilities, Inc. (a Quanta Services company) seeks entire Underground Crews (Foreman/A Lineman/B Lineman/C Lineman/Operator/Groundman). Successful candidates will possess existing experience working together as a construction crew. Preference may also be given to candidates who are able to bring along additional qualified candidates to form entire work crews.

Requirements

Qualifications
- Foreman:
- Provide direct supervision & technical guidance to Linemen, Equipment Operators and Groundmen performing maintenance & construction on underground utility projects.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting site plans, construction prints/drawings and scopes of work.
- Proficient in safe operation of heavy equipment such as backhoes, trenchers, mini-excavators, etc.
- Possess advanced understanding of compliance with OSHA Shoring & Trenching standards.
- Effectively communicate, demonstrate and enforce requirements & best practices.
- Lead and record Job Task Safety Analysis (JTSA) meetings.
- Work with a quality work ethic and be committed to optimal Customer Service.
- Coordinate essential personnel on-site for the project to include crew mobilization, subcontractors, traffic control, etc.
- Manage supplies, materials and equipment necessary to complete assigned work.
- Communicate with relevant personnel as required.
- Understand and follow detailed construction schedules.
- A Lineman:
- Perform rigorous physical labor as required. Including but not limited to digging, rigging, lifting, rescue operations, etc.
- Identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit.
- Proficient in all aspects of working with energized enclosures.
- Professional demeanor and interact positively with fellow crew members, general public and customer representatives.
- Comprehend and read blueprints.
- Properly pull in UG conductors.
- Lead crew in preparation/installation of pad mount transformers & enclosures, in absence of Crew Foreman or with minimal supervision.
- Comprehensive knowledge of operations in terminating UG conductors & secondaries.
- Execute live switching on UG loops.
- Proficient in operation of Digger Derrick, Backhoe, Trencher, Mini-Excavator, Knuckle Crane, etc.
- Proficient in all aspects of heavy lifting and rigging.
- Familiar with induced voltage.
- Proficient in grounding procedures.
- Work in confined spaces.
- Knowledge to properly install, remove and inspect Rubber Goods / Cover Up / PPE.
- Understand how to phase out a line using phasing sticks.
- Understand proper use of phasing sticks.
- Share knowledge with fellow crew members as appropriate.
- Plan safe work based on a job print or work order.
- Understand minimum approach distance.
- Understand flag and tag procedures.
- Perform basic bucket rescue/escape.
- B Lineman:
- Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de-energized conductors.
- Perform rigorous physical labor.
- Learn distribution voltages on a circuit.
- Familiar with induced voltage.
- Learn to understand and read blueprints.
- Assist with inspecting and recognizing structural problems.
- Assist in troubleshooting.
- Function within a Team environment and share knowledge with fellow crew members as appropriate.
- Work alone on de-energized lines.
- Obtain knowledge of wire pulling techniques.
- Assist with installing all types of compression connections.
- Work in confined spaces.
- Properly install and remove PPE and cover up.
- Properly inspect rubber goods, covers and PPE.
- Understand how to tie various lineman knots.
- Make up and use a hand line.
- Understand principles of proper equipment set-up.
- Identify different types of materials used in UG line work.
- Understand minimum approach distance.
- Understand flag and tag procedures.
- Perform basic bucket rescue/escape.
- C Lineman:
- Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of de-energized and energized conductors under direct supervision/instruction by a qualified employee.
- Willing/able to maintain active enrollment in SUI apprenticeship program (high school diploma or equivalent is required for program enrollment).
- Maintain company vehicles, equipment and tools in good working order.
- Do all other related work as required to complete the job.
- Perform rigorous physical labor.
- Learn distribution voltages on a circuit.
- Familiar with induced voltage.
- Learn to understand and read blueprints.
- Assist with inspecting and recognizing structural problems.
- Work productively from an aerial device.
- Assist in troubleshooting.
- Function within a Team environment and share knowledge with fellow crew members as appropriate.
- Work alone on de-energized lines.
- Obtain knowledge of wire stringing techniques.
- Learn and understand how to sag wire from structure or bucket.
- Assist with assembly and erect poles to all heights.
- Assist in framing and setting most basic line structures.
- Assist in framing a de-energized pole structure in the air.
- Assist with installing all types of compression connections.
- Work at heights and/or confined spaces.
- Properly install and remove PPE and cover up.
- Properly inspect rubber goods, covers and PPE.
- Be able to climb different types of structures (wood, steel, etc.) and possess the necessary tools to do so.
- Understand how to tie various lineman knots.
- Make up and use a hand line.
- Understand grounding procedures.
- Understand principles of proper equipment set-up.
- Identify different types of materials used in line work.
- Understand minimum approach distance.
- Understand flag and tag procedures.
- Perform basic bucket rescue/escape.
- Equipment Operator:
- Proficient in safe operation of heavy equipment such as backhoes, trenchers, mini-excavators, knuckle cranes, etc.
- Professional demeanor and interact positively with fellow crew members, general public and customer representatives.
- Basic knowledge of proper techniques for pulling in UG utility lines.
- Maintain company vehicles, equipment and tools in good working order.
- Basic understanding of construction blueprints and how to follow under direction.
- Perform rigorous physical labor.
- Proficient in rigging principles.
- Understand the proper use and maintenance of hand tools.
- Receive and follow directions.
- Function within a Team environment and share knowledge with fellow crew members as appropriate.
- Know basic concepts of equipment set up.

- Groundman:

- Demonstrate a professional appearance & attitude in dealings with co-workers, customers, subcontractors and the general public.
- Assemble materials on the ground and as needed move into work area using safe methods.
- Flag traffic and set up job sites as directed.
- Maintain organization of tools and materials on work vehicles.
- Clean up and organize job sites at completion of work.
- May receive training in the operation of vehicles, power equipment, tools and electrical systems.
