About the role
Sumter Utilities, Inc. (a Quanta Services company) seeks entire Underground Crews (Foreman/A Lineman/B Lineman/C Lineman/Operator/Groundman). Successful candidates will possess existing experience working together as a construction crew. Preference may also be given to candidates who are able to bring along additional qualified candidates to form entire work crews.

Requirements
- Able/willing to travel long distances on short notice, when required.

Foreman
- Provide direct supervision & technical guidance to Linemen, Equipment Operators and Groundmen performing maintenance & construction on underground utility projects.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting site plans, construction prints/drawings and scopes of work.
- Proficient in safe operation of heavy equipment such as backhoes, trenchers, mini-excavators, etc.
- Have total commitment to Safety and Compliance.
- Effective communication, demonstration and enforcement of requirements & best practices.
- Possess advanced understanding of compliance with OSHA Shoring & Trenching standards.
- Effectively lead and record Job Task Safety Analysis (JTSA) meetings.
- Possess a quality work ethic and be committed to optimal Customer Service.
- Responsible for coordinating essential personnel on-site for the project to include crew mobilization, subcontractors, traffic control, etc.
- Possess comfort level with using new technologies (mobile devices/apps).
- Efficiently manage all supplies, materials and equipment necessary to complete assigned work.
- Absorb and communicate detailed construction schedules.
- High School Diploma or Equivalency.
- Coordinate & collaborate effectively with multiple levels within company.
- Travel and work away from home.
- Communicate effectively, demonstrate & encourage teamwork skills and able to understand, comprehend, and follow directions in the workplace.
A Lineman
- Perform rigorous physical labor as required. Including but not limited to digging, rigging, lifting, rescue operations, etc.
- Able to identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit.
- Possess working knowledge of OSHA Shoring & Trenching Standards.
- Proficient in all aspects of working with energized enclosures.
- Professional demeanor and interact in positive way with fellow crew members, general public and customer representatives.
- Possess comprehensive knowledge of operations in terminating UG conductors & secondaries.
- Proficient in operation of Digger Derrick, Backhoe, Trencher, Mini-Excavator, Knuckle Crane, etc.
- Proficient in all aspects of heavy lifting and rigging.
- Familiar with induced voltage.
- Possess knowledge to properly install, remove and inspect Rubber Goods / Cover Up / PPE.
- Understand how to phase out a line using phasing sticks.
- Understand proper use of phasing sticks.
- Able/willing to function within a Team environment and share knowledge with fellow crew members as appropriate.
- Plan safe work based on a job print or work order.
- Understand minimum approach distance.
- Understand flag and tag procedures.
- Able to perform basic bucket rescue/escape.
B Lineman
- Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de-energized conductors.
- Able to pull in UG conductors and set Streetlight poles.
- Maintain company vehicles, equipment and tools in good working order.
- Comprehend & learn OSHA Standards for Shoring & Trenching.
- Perform rigorous physical labor.
- Learn distribution voltages on a circuit.
- Familiar with induced voltage.
- Learn to understand and read blueprints.
- Assist with inspecting and recognizing structural problems.
- Assist in troubleshooting.
- Able/willing to function within a Team environment and share knowledge with fellow crew members as appropriate.
- Work alone on de-energized lines.
- Obtain knowledge of wire pulling techniques.
- Able to assist with installing all types of compression connections.
- Able to work in confined spaces.
- Able to properly install and remove PPE and cover up.
- Able to properly inspect rubber goods, covers and PPE.
- Understand how to tie various lineman knots.
- Able to make up and use a hand line.
- Understand principles of proper equipment set-up.
- Able to identify different types of materials used in UG line work.
- Understand minimum approach distance.
- Understand flag and tag procedures.
- Able to perform basic bucket rescue/escape.
C Lineman
- Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of de-energized and energized conductors under direct supervision/instruction by a qualified employee.
- Willing/able to maintain active enrollment in SUI apprenticeship program (high school diploma or equivalent is required for program enrollment).
- Maintain company vehicles, equipment and tools in good working order.
- All other related work as required to complete the job.
- Perform rigorous physical labor.
- Learn distribution voltages on a circuit.
- Familiar with induced voltage.
- Learn to understand and read blueprints.
- Assist with inspecting and recognizing structural problems.
- Work productively from an aerial device.
- Assist in troubleshooting.
- Able/willing to function within a Team environment and share knowledge with fellow crew members as appropriate.
- Work alone on de-energized lines.
- Obtain knowledge of wire stringing techniques.
- Learn and understand how to sag wire from structure or bucket.
- Able to assist with assembly and erect poles to all heights.
- Able to assist in framing and setting most basic line structures.
- Able to assist in framing a de-energized pole structure in the air.
- Able to assist with installing all types of compression connections.
- Able to work at heights and/or confined spaces.
- Able to properly install and remove PPE and cover up.
- Able to properly inspect rubber goods, covers and PPE.
- Be able to climb different types of structures (wood, steel, etc.) and possess the necessary tools to do so.
- Understand how to tie various lineman knots.
- Able to make up and use a hand line.
- Understand grounding procedures.
- Understand principles of proper equipment set-up.
- Able to identify different types of materials used in line work.
- Understand minimum approach distance.
- Understand flag and tag procedures.
- Able to perform basic bucket rescue/escape.
Equipment Operator
- Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de-energized underground lines.
- Proficient in safe operation of heavy equipment such as backhoes, trenchers, mini-excavators, knuckle cranes, etc.
- Possess professional demeanor and interact in positive way with fellow crew members, general public and customer representatives.
- Maintain company vehicles, equipment and tools in good working order.
- Possess basic knowledge of proper techniques for pulling in UG utility lines.
- Perform rigorous physical labor.
- Possess working knowledge of rigging principles.
- Understand the proper use and maintenance of hand tools.
- Able to receive and follow directions.
- Able/willing to function within a Team environment and share knowledge with fellow crew members as appropriate.
- Possess a basic knowledge of materials used in UG construction work.
- Understand the basic concepts of equipment set up.
- Able to work in/around confined spaces.
- Possess knowledge to properly inspect rubber goods, cover and PPE.
Groundman
- Perform various manual tasks in the construction & maintenance of underground power systems.
- Understand, interpret and follow direction from Crew Foreman and senior crew members.
- Comprehend and apply training in Safety, First Aid and job/task specific topics.
- Willing and able to perform rigorous physical labor.
- Apply positive teamwork with fellow crew members.
- Demonstrate a professional appearance & attitude in dealings with co-workers, customers, subcontractors and the general public.
- Assemble materials on the ground and as needed move into work area using safe methods.
- Flag traffic and set up job sites as directed.
- Maintain organization of tools and materials on work vehicles.
- Clean up and organize job sites at completion of work.
- When aptitude is demonstrated and work allows, may receive training in the operation of vehicles, power equipment, tools and electrical systems.
