Undergraduate Technical Intern - Embedded Systems Engineer
About the Role
PNNL’s National Security Directorate (NSD) drives science-based, mission-focused solutions to address complex, real-world threats to our nation and the world. The Physical Detection Systems and Deployment Division within NSD delivers policy-informed technology solutions by removing barriers to real-world implementation, understanding end-user environments, and transitioning technology from development to deployment. The Advanced Engineered Systems group builds embedded electronic systems for applications including imaging systems, system health monitoring, cyber security, and advanced radio frequency devices to sense and communicate with other devices.
This internship provides an opportunity to apply electrical and computer engineering fundamentals to real-world applications in a research environment, contributing to missions that enhance national security.
Responsibilities
- Write software test utilities in C/C++ and Python.
- Configure software-defined radios (SDR) and RF systems for testing.
- Collect and analyze data from analog and digital systems.
- Read schematics, test circuits, and develop small circuits to meet system needs.
- Configure and test electronic systems for validation and performance verification.
- Analyze data and system responses for performance assessment.
- Troubleshoot RF performance and devise test methods to meet specifications.
- Use command line and remote access to Linux operating systems for task automation and data delivery.
- Apply electronics fundamentals to troubleshoot and correct issues with custom printed circuit boards.
Requirements
- High school diploma/GED or higher.
- Currently enrolled as a degree-seeking undergraduate student at an accredited college or university.
- Taking at least 6 credit hours with an overall cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher.
- U.S. citizenship is required due to access to sensitive systems and information.
Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
- Pursuing an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related field, with coursework or hands-on experience in both hardware (circuits, embedded systems, RF) and software (C/C++, Python).
- Familiarity with source control tools (e.g., Git, Bitbucket, GitHub, Sublime Merge, SourceTree).
- Experience with virtualized containers (e.g., Docker, VMware).
- Skilled in scripting with Python and/or TCL.
- Basic skills in software development with C/C++ or equivalent; experience with GCC for Linux and makefiles is a plus.
- Basic knowledge of electronic circuit theory and familiarity with datasheets.
- Familiarity with Linux operating systems and command line interfaces.

Pay
Minimum Salary: USD $17.13/Hr.
Maximum Salary: USD $27.02/Hr.
