Undergraduate Research Program Manager, Office of Citizen Scholar Development
About the role
The Office of Citizen Scholar Development is home to fellowships and undergraduate research at the University of Virginia. We are concerned with the personal, social, intellectual, and professional development of UVA students and alumni as citizens and scholars. Dedicated to fairness and accessibility, we provide students with accurate information; guide them through reflection and discernment; equip them to seek wise counsel and healthy mentoring relationships; challenge them to articulate goals, to think, and then to act; and support them in pursuing outstanding opportunities to further their development.
Primary Responsibilities
- Manage the Undergraduate Student Opportunities in Academic Research (USOAR) Program and the several research funding opportunities offered by the office;
- Organize and help execute the annual UVA Undergraduate Research Symposium in the spring and the UVA Research Showcase in the fall;
- Manage the unit’s internal application management system;
- Cook up the use of the undergraduate research opportunities portal (new in the fall);
- Maintain and update web materials;
- Maintain, clean, and analyze program data for reporting and program improvements;
- Facilitate two sections of the Introduction to Academic Research I & II course series for USOAR and collaborate with instructional team to support its improvement;
- Facilitate workshops, programs, and talks to promote understanding of undergraduate research and equip interested students to participate;
- Collaborate with staff to prepare written communications to increase student and faculty awareness of opportunities;
- Advise students in discerning fit and pursuing opportunities;
- Host drop-in hours;
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support the mission of the office.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree required.
- Experience: 2 years relevant experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Some graduate study or degree in academic discipline.
- Experience with research and broad understanding of disciplines and methods of research.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational, technical, and analytical skills relevant to administration and program management and evaluation; ability to learn and master relevant LMS (Learning Management Systems) and application management systems.
- Able to manage multiple projects with competing timelines, to perform effectively with a fluctuating workload, and to generate creative problem-solving approaches.
- Demonstrated commitment to upholding the dignity of all students, faculty, and staff with whom they work.
- Willingness and eagerness to learn and grow individually and as part of the office staff.
- Demonstrated maturity, wise decision-making, and professionalism.
Desired Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with SmarterSelect, Smartsheet, and/or database management.
- Experience with one or more other higher-education experiential learning opportunities, such as fellowships, study abroad, advising for graduate and professional education, or community engagement.
- Demonstrated experience teaching or mentoring.
Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
Pay
The anticipated hiring range is $68,000-$78,000, commensurate with education and experience.

Work Arrangement: This position is located in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.
