About the role

Our Unassigned Apprentice Lineman (UAL-1) positions are located throughout the state of Georgia. Flexibility in work locations is essential for progression through the Lineman Development Program. All candidates must be available to work within a certain distance of their assigned operating headquarters upon hire. No relocation assistance is available.

This position is part of Georgia Power’s line crews, which play an integral role in providing reliable electric service to hospitals, government agencies, schools, businesses, and individuals across Georgia.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the construction of overhead and underground power distribution systems.
  • Learn construction and maintenance activities associated with Distribution systems.
  • Operate equipment such as diggers, derricks, cranes, aerial devices, and pulling and tensioning equipment.
  • Work at heights in a bucket truck or by manually climbing poles using spikes and a climbing belt.
  • Learn to safely climb poles, a critical skill for the role.
  • Perform physically demanding activities outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Participate in "call out" duties during storm emergencies, including evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and overnight or out-of-state travel.

Training

The UAL-1 position is part of the Lineman Development Program (LDP), an extensive 4–5-year training program combining skills training, classroom instruction, and on-the-job training. Successful completion of the LDP is required to become a Journeyman Lineman with Georgia Power.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (strongly preferred).
  • Electrical Lineworker Apprentice Certification (ELAC) from a Technical College of Georgia (strongly desired).
  • Basic mechanical and electrical aptitude or background.
  • Minimum of 1 year of work experience in construction, heavy industrial maintenance, utility, military, and/or electrical experience (preferred).
  • Experience working outdoors, with heavy equipment/machinery, rigging/lifting, emergency response, commercial truck driving, tree trimming, or farming (a plus).
  • Military experience (strongly desired).
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to climb and work comfortably at heights of 30 to 75 feet (climbing experience is a plus).
  • Ability to take instruction and translate it into action.
  • Capability to perform physically demanding tasks in extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow/ice, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and exhibit ethical behaviors aligned with company values: Safety Excellence, Unquestionable Trust, Superior Performance, and Total Commitment.
  • History of safe work practices and accident-free/injury-free performance.
  • Must currently weigh (and maintain body weight) at or below 270 pounds (fully dressed, including steel-toed work boots and hard hat) due to equipment weight restrictions.
  • Ability to lift and drag equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.
  • Valid driver’s license with at least one year of verifiable driving experience.
  • No revocation of driving privileges within the last 36 months, no convictions of major traffic violations (DUI, hit and run, reckless driving, etc.) within the last 12 months, and no pending charges for major traffic violations at the time of application.
  • Must consent to continuous monitoring of your Motor Vehicle Record.
  • Must possess or obtain one of the following before starting:
    • Valid CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) - Class A, or
    • Valid CDL Learner’s Permit, or
    • Ability to obtain a CDL permit before the start date (military candidates may obtain a Georgia CDL Permit Waiver).
  • If hired with a CDL Learner’s Permit, must obtain a CDL - Class A within 6 months of hire.
  • Must pass a pre-employment written exam (CAST Test) covering Graphic Arithmetic, Mathematical Usage, Mechanical Concepts, and Reading Comprehension.
  • Must pass a Post Offer Employment Test (POET) if offered a job.
  • Must pass a thorough background check and DOT drug screen (including nicotine) prior to employment.
  • Must successfully complete a Pre-Employment (DOT) physical exam approved by the company physician.

Pay

Current starting pay for all new hires is $4,706/month or approximately $27.15/hour. This rate is non-negotiable and applies regardless of experience or skills.

Schedule

  • Full-time position.
  • Availability for "call out" duties during storm emergencies, including evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and overnight or out-of-state travel (at least 50% of the times requested).
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions throughout the year.
