This is a PRN "As Needed" position.

About the Role

The Protective Services Officer provides internal and external safety/security functions to support the general safety of BSMH facilities, including participation in investigations and detentions when warranted. Officers are assigned to an area and respond to radio and/or telephone calls for routine and/or emergency assistance.

Responsibilities

  • Protects patients, visitors, and employees by providing escorts, patrolling grounds, and mitigating environment of care safety hazards.
  • Deters criminal activity through routine patrols of all hospital property, including parking lots and decks.
  • Enforces policies such as parking regulations, visitation policies, drug enforcement, and tobacco-free/smoking policy.
  • Monitors hospital activity on closed-circuit television to identify escalating situations requiring protective services involvement.
  • Intervenes in patient, visitor, and/or staff confrontations as appropriate.
  • Documents all duties performed, including completion of daily activity logs and incident reports.
  • Demonstrates understanding of emergency procedures, alarm response, evacuation, and internal/external disaster plans.
  • Responds to emergency situations and hospital alarms as designated.
  • Completes mandatory education and training to maintain organization and department-specific competencies and requirements.
  • Maintains applicable certification/licensure.
  • Remains on assigned post and completes all post-specific duties.
  • Ensures post and patrol vehicles remain clean, neat, and free of non-work-related material.
  • Follows organizational policies and procedures, with special attention to attendance, punctuality, confidentiality, dress code, ID badge display, and safety.
  • Maintains a professional demeanor at all times while on duty.
  • Maintains proficiency and standards with all issued equipment.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served, including neonates, infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.
  • Exercises universal precautions, uses personal protective equipment, and follows infection control policies.

Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license (required).
  • BLS Basic Life Support – American Heart Association (required within 6 months of hire).
  • High school diploma or GED (required).
  • Vocational/Technical Degree (preferred).
  • 1-2 years of security, law enforcement, or military experience (preferred).
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training (required within 6 months of hire).

Hard/Tech/Clinical Skills

  • Basic skills using Microsoft Word.
  • Proficiency in the use, maintenance, and safety protocols for defensive tools and restraint equipment (e.g., batons, handcuffs, body-worn cameras, soft restraints), aligned with healthcare regulations and organizational policies.
  • Technical skills in radio communication, report writing, surveillance systems, and access control software.
  • Ability to accurately document incidents and coordinate effectively with clinical teams and law enforcement.
