Responsibilities

  • Maintain high visibility as a visual deterrent to crime and criminal elements
  • Answer routine questions, provide directions, and handle minor problems
  • Monitor the entry and exit of personnel at client agency facilities
  • Observe and immediately report situations to appropriate personnel or emergency services via telephone, radio, or other means
  • Contact local law enforcement or emergency personnel in cases of assault, burglary, robbery, vandalism, suspicious activities, serious injuries, illnesses, fires, or smoke
  • Inspect facilities to ensure doors, windows, roofs, and lights are secure and not defective
  • Note areas where staff is working after-hours
  • Report accidents, injuries, electrical outages, broken pipes, smashed windows, and notify proper departments for repairs
  • Protect state property and deter theft through physical presence and security checks
  • Report unusual conditions to proper personnel, including law enforcement
  • Maintain security logs, write incident reports, and notify appropriate client agency personnel

Requirements

  • Must be mentally alert and capable of exercising good judgment, implementing instructions, and assimilating specialized training
  • Must have the ability to speak, read, and write English
  • Must understand and carry out oral and written directions and write accurate, clear reports
  • Must be able to monitor environmental and electronic security systems
  • Must undergo a physical examination within six months prior to assignment
  • Must successfully pass a preemployment drug screen for marijuana, cocaine, heroin, amphetamines, opiates, and benzodiazepines
  • Must complete training in Security and Emergency Procedures, Crowd Control, handling irate/hostile individuals, and Public Relations
  • Must undergo training in state policies regarding drug awareness, sexual harassment, workplace violence, discrimination, and equipment use prohibition
  • Must successfully complete training for operating electronic computer, alarm, and communication systems
  • Must possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
  • Must have a valid California Driver’s License or California Identification card (mandatory if driving is required for the assignment)
  • Must complete and maintain current First Aid and CPR certification

Qualifications

  • Must be fully capable of performing security work requiring moderate to arduous physical exertion under normal or emergency conditions
  • Must exhibit good general health without physical defects or abnormalities that interfere with duty performance
  • Must possess good distance vision in each eye, correctable to 20/30 on the Snellen chart, with normal fields of vision, depth perception, and close vision correctable to Jaeger #4 type test
  • Must have the ability to distinguish basic colors
  • Hearing loss must not exceed 30 decibels in both ears or 35 decibels in the poorer ear
  • Must possess a Guard Registration card
