Responsibilities

• Performs ultrasound procedures and related techniques, producing images for interpretation by, and at the request of, a licensed independent practitioner; may be required to learn to scan vascular exams (e.g., venous duplex scans).
• Provides direct patient care in a compassionate and timely manner.
• Under the direction of Radiology leadership, performs duties directly involved with a variety of technical procedures using ultrasound for diagnosis of disease or pathology.
• Evaluates the patient, verifies patient ID and related information to ensure the appropriate procedure is performed.
• Explains the procedure to the patient; prepares the patient by obtaining and recording patient history and consent form (if applicable).
• Ensures patient comfort, privacy and safety during the procedure; monitors patient condition and medical equipment, reporting changes to patient care services.
• Documents sonographer’s impressions and relays findings to the physician.
• Obtains and records images necessary to demonstrate normal and pathological findings; documents all pertinent information (e.g., lab values, patient histories).
• Demonstrates and maintains clinical competency across patient populations: newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric as deemed necessary by the facility.
• Participates in performance improvement projects and assists the department in achieving successful results in all federal, state and local agency audits.
• Participates in the education/instruction of students and the orientation of new staff.
• Performs high-level disinfection of probes per Joint Commission standards.
• Uses various ultrasound modalities dependent on the type of anatomy being examined.
• Becomes proficient in recognizing cross-sectional anatomy and understanding of related technology.
• Demonstrates favorable guest relations and promotes hospital values in daily work performance.
• May perform other related patient care duties as assigned.

Education

• Associate’s degree or AMA allied health training program in Ultrasound (preferred).

Licensing & Certifications

• Graduate of an ultrasonography program and ARDMS or ARRT registry eligible (required).
• Certification/Registration with ARRT or ARDMS (required).
• Advanced modality registration in Ultrasound Technology by ARDMS or ARRT (preferred, or must obtain within 2 years).

Experience

• 1 year experience as an Ultrasound Tech (preferred).

• Customer Service Training: EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) (preferred); Picture Archiving Communication System (PACS) (preferred).
