Ultrasound Technologist - PRN
Seeking an Ultrasound Technologist to work on an as-needed basis, including 12-hour night shifts, weekdays, weekends, and holiday rotations.
About the Role
With limited supervision and broad direction from the Radiology Manager, Clinical Imaging Supervisor, and Radiologists, this role provides a variety of diagnostic services using reflected sound waves to display images of body tissue for neonatal, infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient populations. The position supports and incorporates Frederick Health’s mission, vision, core values, and customer service philosophy while adhering to the FH Compliance Program and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
- Performs a variety of sonographic examinations (abdomen, OB, etc.), recording anatomic, pathologic, and/or physiologic data for interpretation by the radiologist.
- Selects proper technical settings and scan protocols from the computer menu.
- Transmits images to PACS for interpretation and permanent record.
- Assists radiologist during ultrasound-guided biopsy and aspiration procedures.
- Performs echographic images and obtains optimal images to ensure accurate diagnosis.
- Evaluates ultrasound images with the radiologist.
- Monitors equipment status to prevent damage.
- Obtains informed consent and applies standard precautions and sterile technique.
- Ensures cleanliness and orderliness of workspace.
- Checks drug interaction kit for missing or expired items.
- Ensures patient records are complete and signed prior to examination completion.
- Executes tasks associated with PACS and HIS systems.
- Screens patients for possibility of pregnancy.
- Applies proper radiation protection according to prescribed safety standards.
- Performs other duties as assigned, including preparing exam rooms and maintaining/cleaning sonographic equipment.
Requirements
- CPR certification.
- Graduate of a JRCERT-approved program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
- Credentials from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (or within one year of hire).
Skills
- Capable of working independently.

- Ability to manage stressful work with patients having potentially disabling or terminal conditions.
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve minor equipment problems.
Patient Contact
Must demonstrate and maintain current knowledge and skills in providing appropriate care for patients across all age groups:
- Neonate (0–30 days)
- Infant (31 days–12 months)
- Child (13 months–12 years)
- Adolescent (13–17 years)
- Adult (18–65 years)
- Geriatric (66+ years)
Physical Demands
- Medium-Heavy Work: Lifting up to 100 pounds infrequently (less than once every three minutes) and/or carrying up to 50 pounds while walking.
- Pushing or pulling up to 115 pounds infrequently or greater than 115 pounds occasionally (no more than once per hour).

- Repetition: Repeating the same motion may stress muscles and tendons, depending on frequency, speed, force, and muscles involved.
- Forceful Exertion: Physical effort required for tasks such as moving patients or equipment, influenced by grip, weight, posture, and duration.
- Awkward Posture: Repeated or prolonged reaching, twisting, bending, kneeling, squatting, or working overhead may strain muscles.
- Contact Stress: Pressure on nerves, tendons, or blood vessels from hard edges (e.g., using the palm to hit or stick objects).
Working Conditions
- Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Risk: Category A – Will have exposure to blood or body fluids.

Pay
Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. For part-time positions, salary is pro-rated based on scheduled hours. Non-exempt positions may include shift differential and/or overtime pay, if applicable.
Hourly range: $36.63 – $52.65.
