Ultrasound Technician / Medical Assistant
Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties has a full-time opportunity for an Ultrasound Technician / Medical Assistant in Orange, CA.
About the role
The Ultrasound Technician / Medical Assistant will provide ultrasounds for surgical and non-surgical patients up to 24 weeks gestation as well as supporting functions in the delivery of reproductive health care, primary care, and surgical services. They will assist patients by providing testing, screening, education/counseling, and assisting both pre- and post-surgical procedures. The role involves working alongside providers to ensure high-quality, efficient care, triaging patients, preparing exam rooms, and assisting during medical procedures, including surgical abortion services up to 24 weeks. The position requires providing non-judgmental, empathetic care.
Responsibilities
- Independently perform ultrasound functions, including:
- Following agency protocols for ultrasound documentation and quality standards.
- Performing ultrasounds per abortion protocol up to 24 weeks.
- Providing accurate sizing and dating of pregnancy.
- Recognizing and communicating ultrasound findings that may affect service provision.
- Providing intraoperative ultrasound guidance, including:
- Locating IUDs for removal and verifying placement.
- Intraoperative guidance during pregnancy termination.
- Ultrasound guidance for intramniotic digoxin administration.
- Perform and/or coordinate back-office functions, including:
- Handling difficult counseling situations (e.g., rape, STIs, late abortion).
- Performing basic lab work (Hgb, pregnancy tests, urine dipsticks).
- Processing specimens for outside lab testing.
- Obtaining vital signs (blood pressure, height, weight).
- Cleaning and sterilizing equipment, stocking exam rooms.
- Assisting nurses and clinicians as needed.
- Conducting MA-only patient visits and options counseling for pregnancy test visits.
- Obtaining medical history, interviewing, counseling, and educating clients to ensure informed consent.
- Performing options and abortion education, scheduling follow-up appointments.
- Perform and/or coordinate surgical center back-office functions, including:
- Analyzing products of conception checks up to 24 weeks, testing for Hgb and pregnancy, packaging specimens, recording lab results, and triaging abnormal results.
- Preparing and stocking exam/procedure rooms, including cleaning and sterilizing equipment.
- Assisting doctors during procedures, including ultrasound guidance for laminaria and digoxin administration.
- Providing patient care pre- and post-procedure:
- Connecting patients to EKG, blood pressure, and pulse oximeter.
- Transporting patients to recovery, cleaning bodily fluids, and translating post-procedure instructions.
- Educating and counseling patients on reproductive health care, including contraceptives, emergency contraception, and abortions up to 24 weeks.
- Complying with infection control, safety, and emergency guidelines.
- Scheduling appointments and supporting clinical staff in family planning services.
- Ensure client satisfaction by establishing rapport, remaining responsive to medical and educational needs, and delivering care in a professional, expedient manner.
- Prepare the center for opening and secure it for closing as required.

Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Certified Ultrasound Technician.
- Medical assistant certificate required.
- 2 years of experience in a clinical setting desirable.
- Experience in reproductive, managed/primary health care, and/or abortion services desirable.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong judgment, initiative, and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to relate to diverse communities with a warm, caring demeanor.
- Accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to read and implement written instructions.
- Physical ability to assist patients in distress and transport them from procedure to recovery rooms.

Pay
Minimum Salary Range: USD $57,692.00/year
Maximum Salary Range: USD $71,979.00/year
