About the role

Under limited supervision and the direction of the Radiologist, the Ultrasound Technologist completes sonography procedures including routine sonograms as well as interventional sonograms including biopsies.

Responsibilities

  • Perform sonography procedures, including routine and interventional sonograms such as biopsies.
  • Participate in Performance Improvement and Quality Improvement activities.
  • Work within the guidelines established in the policies and procedure manual and comply with all safety and infection control guidelines.
  • Adhere to JCAHO, State, or other regulatory or accreditation agency requirements.
  • Accurately complete sonography examinations as ordered by referring physicians.
  • Use radiology information systems to obtain previous examination reports.
  • Correctly and safely operate sonographic equipment and perform invasive procedures following orientation.
  • Routine use of office equipment (phone, fax, pagers).
  • Communicate effectively with patients, physicians, nurses, and other medical personnel.
  • Handle periods of intensity with calm and maintain composure in stressful situations.
  • Perform required sonographic duties regardless of the patient’s condition.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited program in Radiologic Technology and/or School of Sonography (two-year program or four-year BA program in Radiology Technology followed by training in sonography).
  • Completion of requirements from an accredited school in sonography, including meeting all clinical requirements.
  • Current registration/licensure/certification in good standing with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
  • Must be registered in vascular and a minimum of two of the following areas: OB/Gyn, Abdomen, or Breast.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 30 days of hire.
  • Minimum of one-year hospital department experience in medical sonography, including biopsies.
  • As the department becomes ACR accredited, may be required to obtain specific certifications such as breast sonography.
