Ultrasound Tech (Casual)

Performs highest quality sonographic procedures. Applies sound judgement and initiative to use ultrasound for diagnosis, including color doppler vascular exams, abdominal, OB/GYN, and small parts exams. Responsible for designated areas or procedures, including departmental, surgery, Cath Lab, and portable exams.

Responsibilities

• Explains the test to the patient and instructs/assists them in assuming the correct physical position for examination.
• Maintains assigned work area, reporting any equipment not in proper working condition, and routinely checks cords and carts for safety.
• Adheres to JCAHO standards for ultrasound.
• Produces high-quality ultrasound scans according to protocols and physicians' orders in a timely manner.
• Selects transducers and adjusts equipment controls based on the organ to be scanned, depth of field, and other test specifications.
• Maintains working knowledge of scanning equipment to maximize image quality and expedite exams.
• Moves transducer over specified body areas and monitors the quality of the ultrasonic pattern produced.
• Assists Radiologists with patient procedures.
• Maintains records, prepares charge vouchers, and tracks/records information in electronic record systems.
• Sends all completed images to PACS.
• Keeps CME points updated for ARDMS and participates in in-service education.
• Provides direction, assists in cross-training technologists, and complies with hospital and department policies.
• Performs sterile/isolation techniques to prevent cross-contamination and adheres to OSHA standards.
• Properly assesses, updates, and verifies patient information in the RMS system, including lab records and insurance pre-certification.
• Demonstrates knowledge and skill to provide age-appropriate care and education (neonatal, pediatric, adolescence, adult, geriatric).
• Assesses and interprets patient information to identify age-specific needs and provides appropriate care.
• May adjust oxygen flow from wall gauges to tanks as ordered by the physician.
• Performs related duties such as statistics, research, scheduling, and quality assurance.

Requirements

• Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) certification through ARDMS.
• One (1) specialty certification through ARDMS in one of the following:
  • Abdomen (AB)
  • Obstetrics & Gynecology (OB/GYN)
  • Pediatric Sonography (PS)
  • Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT)
  • Breast
  • Musculoskeletal (MSK)
• CPR certification within 30 days of hire.

Qualifications

• Preferred: One (1) year of sonographer experience.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
• Ability to lift, push, or pull a minimum of 40 pounds.
• Hearing (aid permitted) – must function without lip reading.
• Visual acuity (corrected) – keen for both distant and near objects/individuals (e.g., ability to read small print).
