About the role
The Senior Manager, U.S. Indirect Tax will lead sales and use tax strategy across product launches, business initiatives, compliance, audits, and tax operations, while partnering closely with Product, Engineering, Legal, Finance, and Operations.
Responsibilities
- Own U.S. sales and use tax compliance
- Lead U.S. sales and use tax compliance across all applicable state and local jurisdictions, including manage nexus analyses, registrations, return filings, reconciliations, and compliance monitoring.
- Maintain and periodically review formal sales and use tax position documentation.
- Support risk assessments and maintain defensible audit-ready documentation.
- Manage sales and use tax audits, notices, information requests, and voluntary disclosure initiatives.
- Develop and document scalable processes, controls, and governance frameworks that support Whop’s continued growth.
- Identify opportunities to streamline workflows, reduce risk, and improve operational effectiveness across the indirect tax function.
Requirements
- 15+ years of progressive indirect tax experience in public accounting, industry, government, or a combination thereof, with deep expertise in U.S. sales and use tax.
- Strong technical knowledge of marketplace facilitator laws, digital product taxation, SaaS taxation, payment processing models, and platform-based business structures.
- Experience supporting indirect tax matters within a technology, fintech, marketplace, SaaS, or e-commerce environment is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience managing multistate compliance programs, including nexus analysis, registrations, filings, audits, and controversy matters.
- Experience implementing or managing tax technology and automation solutions.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to balance technical accuracy and practical business considerations.
- Proven ability to work cross-functionally with Finance, Legal, Product, Engineering, and Operations teams.
- Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, high-growth environment with significant ownership and autonomy.
Qualifications
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex tax concepts into actionable business guidance.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA, MST, JD, LL.M., or equivalent advanced tax credentials preferred.
Benefits
Base salary range: $150,000–$225,000 per year, plus equity, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Schedule
On-site work at the Palo Alto office is currently required on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.
