About the role

The Officer Candidate School (OCS) is the U.S. Army's main training academy for prospective Army Officers. It is open to qualified enlisted Noncommissioned Officers and civilians with at least a four-year college degree.

Responsibilities

Candidates who successfully complete the 12-week school receive formal commissions as U.S. Army Officers and are prepared to command Soldiers. The role involves:

  • Learning tactics and training
  • Dealing with mental and emotional stress
  • Giving orders and leading units

Requirements

To qualify as a civilian candidate:

  • A U.S. citizen
  • A college graduate with at least a four-year degree
  • Between 19 and 32 years old (must enter active duty or ship to training by age 33 and accept commission before age 34)
  • Eligible for a secret security clearance
  • Healthy and in good physical condition
  • In good moral standing with no felony-level offenses
  • Able to meet height/weight standards
  • No major medical procedures that would prohibit service
  • No tattoos on the hands, neck or face
