TYPIST CLERK II - SUBSTITUTE/TEMPORARY (2358)
About the role
This recruitment is focused on hiring substitute/hourly employees. Substitute employees are paid a fixed hourly rate at the first step of the salary range. Substitute positions do not include benefits. Some positions may require bilingual skills in Armenian, Korean, or Spanish.
Responsibilities
- Performs clerical work including proofreading, skilled typing, filing, checking and recording information on records;
- Sorts, codes, and files correspondence, vouchers, forms, documents, and other materials numerically, alphabetically or by another predetermined classification;
- Acts as a receptionist; accepts applications for school services; answers the telephone and gives information to the general public; receives and refers inquiries to appropriate staff;
- Maintains records; enters or extracts information on or from records using a computer terminal;
- Typing data on vouchers, cards, and other forms; addressing envelopes, operating photocopying and duplicating machines; may cut stencils;
- Operates various office equipment;
- Gathers, compiles, and summarizes data and maintains records;
- Orders, receives, stores, issues, and delivers supplies, books, materials, and equipment;
- Typing letters, reports, requisitions, schedules, forms, contracts, and similar materials from rough drafts, marginal notes, or verbal instructions;
- Reviews records for accuracy;
- May notify parents or other responsible adults of student illness and bring to the attention of the school nurse an apparent need for medical, mental, or dental referral.
Requirements
- One year of recent experience in general clerical work;
- Ability to type/keyboard input accurately at a speed not less than 40 net words per minute and with 80% accuracy;
- Possession of a standard Red Cross First-Aid certificate within three months of appointment may be required.
Desirable
- Written and oral proficiency in a second language.

Salary
Substitute employees are paid a fixed hourly rate. Substitute positions do not include benefits. After an offer of employment, a candidate must submit proof of freedom from tuberculosis. Also required after an offer, the candidate must complete a pre-employment physical examination and obtain fingerprint clearance through the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (district-paid).
Benefits for permanent employees
Permanent employees with satisfactory service receive salary increases upon completion of their probationary period and at one-year intervals thereafter, up to the maximum rate. Holidays, sick leave, and retirement benefits are provided for permanent employees who work 4 or more hours per day.

Examination Process
A review of the applicants' experience and qualifications will be conducted. Based on that evaluation, a limited number of applicants whose qualifications best meet the current needs of the district will be invited to participate in the next step of the examination process. The examination process will consist of one or more related test parts covering any subject matter appropriate to the duties of the position. Qualified applicants will be advised of the test components and weights prior to the administration of the first test part.
Eligibility List
Candidates successfully completing all phases of the application and examination procedure will be ranked on the appropriate eligibility list according to their total examination scores. This list is normally in effect for one year.
Classification
When a vacant position is to be filled, the top three reachable ranks from the eligibility list are contacted for employment interviews. The supervisor of the vacant position will interview those candidates and may make a selection from any one of them. Depending on the vacancy, current employees in the same classification who have a transfer request on file, may also be interviewed. New employees must serve a six-month or one-year probationary period, depending on the classification involved.
Fingerprint Requirement
All classified employees are required to be fingerprinted. Candidates are responsible for paying the fees.
Certificate of Tuberculosis Examination
New employees must furnish proof that within the last 60 days they have had a Mantoux tuberculin skin test.
Accommodation

Physical Examination
Employees must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential duties of the position without hazard to themselves or others. As a condition of employment, all prospective new hires must receive District approval relating to their fitness to work based on a physical examination. Tests must be given by a District-approved physician.
Mandatory Child Abuse Reporting Training (AB1432)
As a state requirement, all prospective employees of the district are required to complete the Mandated Reporter Educators Training course, prior to their start date of employment. The training must also be completed annually thereafter.
Veterans Preference
Five additional points of credit are added in entry-level examinations to the final passing score of qualified veterans showing 30 days or more service during time of war (10 points for disabled veterans) upon presentation of proof of veterans' status (Form DD-214). This evidence must be presented during the examination procedure. No credit will be given after this period.

All current employees are reminded that in order to promote, an application must be filed during the filing period, tests must be taken, and passed. Permanent employees interested in a transfer must file a transfer request form.
