About the role
The VBOC Business Consultant III provides journey-level business consulting, training, and technical assistance to veteran-owned and military-connected small businesses in support of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Veteran Business Outreach Center (VBOC) program.
Responsibilities
- Provides one-on-one business consulting to veteran and military-connected entrepreneurs on topics such as business planning, marketing, operations, and basic financial management.
- Affords clients with understanding business readiness, identifying challenges, and developing practical action plans.
- Reviews basic business financial information, including cash flow and profit-and-loss statements, and provides guidance consistent with program scope.
- Develops and delivers training workshops, seminars, and presentations for small business audiences.
- Participates in outreach activities to promote VBOC services to veterans, military spouses, and community partners.
- Documents client engagements, services provided, and outcomes in accordance with SBA grant and reporting requirements.
- Collects and organizes data for reports, performance tracking, and program evaluation.
- Collaborates with partner organizations, lenders, and resource providers.
- Assists with compliance activities and supports continuous improvement of service delivery.
- Attends and participates in local, state, and federal meetings and training sessions specific to the Veteran Entrepreneur Department.
- Develops and maintains the Veteran Entrepreneur database.
- Extensive travel (up to 50%) is required for job-related functions.
- Work hours other than 8-5 are required for work-related functions.
Requirements
- Four (4) years of related experience developing content and slide presentations, coordinating and delivering public speaking engagements to large audiences.
- Four (4) years of experience in business financials, marketing, or business ownership.
- Honorably discharged veteran or military spouse.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in business administration, management, entrepreneurship, finance, accounting, or a related field.
- Master's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in business administration, management, entrepreneurship, finance, accounting, or a related field.
- Previous business operations or sales consulting experience.
- Familiarity with SBA programs, SBDC/VBOC services, or publicly funded business assistance programs.
- Experience using client management or performance tracking systems.
Skills
- Ability to carefully listen to and demonstrate patience with veteran entrepreneurs.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Advanced computer skills, including conducting internet research, operating Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and other PC-based programs.
- Knowledge of current business trends, including local, state, and federal programs, incentives, and partnerships.
- Customer Resource Management experience (Salesforce, Siebel/Oracle, MS Dynamics, etc.).
- Excellent project management skills, including managing multiple projects with critical time frames.
- Expertise in the Veterans Preference registration process at the state and federal levels.
- Ability to gather, assemble, correlate, and analyze business-related facts, and devise solutions to business problems.
- Ability to prepare concise reports, training curricula, and presentations.

Pay
Commensurate with experience.
Schedule
Night and weekend work hours are required beyond a standard 8-5 schedule to meet program, training, and client service needs.
