About the role

The VBOC Business Consultant IV provides senior-level, specialized business consulting and technical assistance to veteran-owned and military-connected small businesses. This position independently delivers highly complex advisory services, develops and facilitates advanced training, and supports performance monitoring and reporting requirements associated with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Veteran Business Outreach Center (VBOC) program.

Responsibilities

  • Provides independent, one-on-one business consulting to veteran and military-connected entrepreneurs, including assessment of business viability, financial analysis, growth strategy, market readiness, and operational planning.
  • Analyzes small business financial statements (e.g., cash flow, profit and loss, balance sheet) and develops customized, actionable recommendations.
  • Designs, develops, and delivers advanced training workshops, presentations, and outreach events aligned with SBA priorities and the needs of veteran business owners.
  • Evaluate trends, service delivery outcomes, and client needs to identify gaps and recommend program or service improvements.
  • Supports required SBA performance metrics and reporting, ensuring accurate documentation of client engagements, outcomes, and program impact.
  • Collaborates with internal staff, statewide veteran service programs, and external business development partners to coordinate services and referrals.
  • Provides technical guidance and subject-matter expertise related to VBOC services, best practices, and compliance expectations.
  • Represents the VBOC program at community events, professional forums, and stakeholder meetings to promote services, veteran entrepreneurship, and the Veteran Entrepreneur Department.
  • Develops and maintains the Veteran Entrepreneur database.
  • Extensive travel (up to 50%) is required for job-related functions.

Requirements

  • Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in business administration, management, entrepreneurship, finance, accounting, or a related field. College transcripts are required and must be provided before an interview can be extended.
  • Minimum Experience: Six (6) or more years of progressively responsible experience providing business consulting, advisory services, training, or related technical assistance to small businesses or entrepreneurs. Four (4) or more years of demonstrated experience in business financial analysis, marketing, sales strategy, operations, or business ownership.
  • Four (4) or more years of experience developing and delivering training or presentations to diverse or large audiences.
  • Honorably discharged veteran or eligible military spouse. Applicants must provide a DD form 214 (member #1 not accepted), NA Form 13038, or a VA Summary Benefits Letter to demonstrate qualification.

Qualifications

  • A valid Texas Driver's License must be provided within 90 days of hire.
  • A Business Consultant Certification must be obtained within 6 months of hire.

  • Knowledge of small business development principles, financial management, and entrepreneurship best practices.
  • Ability to independently assess complex business challenges and develop practical, results-oriented solutions.
  • Skill in delivering professional training and communicating complex concepts clearly to varied audiences.
  • Advanced proficiency with standard office software and data tracking systems.
  • Strong organizational, time-management, and stakeholder collaboration skills.
  • Excellent project management skills, including managing multiple projects with critical time frames.
  • Knowledge of current business trends, including local, state, and federal programs, incentives, and partnerships.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective public contacts.
